  1. Cams and Crank Re-Alignment

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I`ve learned a great deal researching threads thru this site. This has been truly educational and humbling. Thanks. There are two threads similar to my issue but not quite resolving my problem. I own a 2004 Passat 2.8L GLX 4Motion and I refuse to believe I can`t fix this. I started doing the...
  2. Uber technical question about intake cams

    B5 Garage
I can't believe this happened to me. I don't know which intake cam to put in which head. V6 AHA designation. In this case same as ATQ designation. Notice the notch (referenced by pen tip - for clarity) Now notice the position of the lobes on the cam, clearly different. Which cam goes where...

  4. How to get my 2.8 cams back in time

    B5 Garage
I'm in the process of changing the timing belt on my 2003, 2.8 liter. After I got the belt on I cranked the engine over twice by hand and when I got back to where the cams were aligned with each other the shaft was about 10° off of TDC. I took the belt off to straighten it out, but forgot to put...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Recently I replaced the chain tensioner now i have followed multiple directions on timing the cams. 6. Dash cams

    Anything Auto
So here's a question: is anyone running dual dash cams? (Aka 1 front 1 rear?) Are they useful? I see the front one as a good investment in case someone brake checks or something but would rear one be worth the investment?
  7. lining up ATQ cams

    B5 Garage
See pic below - crank set at TDC and drivers side cam looks right but passenger side cam seems to be a bit behind. I do not have to cam lock tool yet, but it is in the mail. Regardless it looks as though it will not line up properly assuming that the cam alignment plates are supposed to be...
  8. V6 Drive Chain Alignment on Intake and Exhaust Cams

    B5 Garage
I have a 2000 30V V6 Passat, and I've recently removed both camshafts from the passenger and driver cylinder heads. My question is one that's been repeated many times on this forum, but haven't found a clear answer for: When the exhaust camshafts are aligned with each other (TDC), should the...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I found that a company in AUS made cams for the V6, I forget the name but I know they are very popular with the EVOs. Anyone do a cam setup? What brand name cams? Im curious.

  12. Reinstalling cams 2001 V6 - Not TDC?

    B5 Garage
I'm doing the full seal replacement on a V6 passat. The Bentley manual says when reinstalling the cams, " The pistons must not be positioned at TDC." Earlier it says "Turn crankshaft back slightly." Not very technical. My question is, what position should the engine be in?. I'd rather not go...

    B5 Garage
Just got done building up my heads which were redone. Got the notches and my cap arrows lined up with the 16 rollers as per Bentley. They call this TDC in the text. However the two flats on the camshaft drive ends are not facing toward the centerline of the engine. So when I reinstall the...

I sent the head for my 99' 1.8t off to be reconditioned. I had not taken the camshaft chain or tensioner off. When they sent the head back, they had installed the cams but sent the chain and tensioner in a box. I did not mark the sprocket or chains before I sent it. Anyone know how to get them...
  20. Removing cams from V6...finding TDC?

    B5 Garage
I'm just wondering... If I remove the cam gear and pull the cams off the head, how to I find TDC for the cams again? When you just do a belt the cams usually stay at TDC and when you lossen up the gears it stays there. Well once you've removed the gears AND lost TDC, how do you find it again...
