  1. Carbon buildup on cylinder 1 wall

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Tearing into a 2003 1.8t. P.O. had head completely redone after tb failure, screwed up timing and bent the new valves before the car ever ran, so after pulling the head noticed what seems to me like a lot of carbon buildup on the #1 cylinder wall. Is mostly at the top passenger side section of...
  2. Low coolant level + buildup?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Hey all, hope everyone is having a nice summer so far. I took the car out the other day for a short but easy trip down the road to drop off a package. It made it all the way out and back, but when I was getting ready to park the car on the curb I got a coolant level warning light on the dash...
  3. Cold start oil pressure buildup time - should it take a full 2 seconds?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
A question for those of you with mechanical oil pressure guages. Just wondering if this is normal - oil pressure lags the engine start by a full 2 seconds when cold, when warm the pressure goes up immediately. I definitely get cam chain tensioner rattling on those cold starts. Vid 1: warm...
  4. Carbon Buildup

    Volkswagen Passat B6 Discussion
I spent my day off from work opening my manifold and manually cleaning my valves. It was a great learning experience and I'm pretty happy with the results. I used GM Top Engine Cleaner to soak the valves, but the best method by far was to scrape with picks and suck with a shop vac. I also...
  5. Water buildup in computer case?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Water buildup in computer, fryday or good to go? Got a 99 1.8t, engine is running a little weird and wouldn't start consistently. I saw a post about condensation and water buildup in the computer area under the driver's foot well. :wrench: So I pull the side molding, lift the carpet, padding is...
  6. exhaust carbon buildup

    Volkswagen Passat B6 Discussion
I proudly own an '06 Passat 2.0T automatic which just turned 57000 miles. When I purchased my vehicle 3 months ago, I installed Bosch platinum plugs(preset gap), changed the air filter, along with 5w30 synthetic oil & oil filter. The car runs fantastic averaging 28-32 mpg on 91 octane gasoline...
  7. Does a gas saving driving style cause carbon buildup?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I try to accelerate slow and try to keep the tach below 2500(below 2250 most of the time) to save gas. I try to only take the RPM above 2250 on the highway or when I'm late. Anyway, does a gas saving driving style cause carbon buildup, because that's what my lady friend always says.
  8. Test-pipe Carbon Build-up

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Has anyone installed a Test-pipe on thier 1.8T and found excess carbon build up on the back deck or tail section of thier car? I figure when removing the Cat. the unburned carbon has to go somewhere! Even with the cat you can see some carbon build up on the exhaust tip>
  9. Brake dust buildup on rims...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
OK, here is one for all the "experts" out there. On my 2000 1.8T I have more brake dust buildup on my rear rims than my front ones. This seems a little odd to me as all my other cars had more on the front rims. What could it be a symptom of? Should I be doing anything about it? (besides cleaning...
  10. Carbon build-up in intake valve

    B5 Garage
Had the CEL come on on my '05 Passat 1.8T (around 5500 miles). Took it to the dealer and they were able to find carbon build-up in the intake valve. They just cleared the codes to make the CEL go away, and have advised me to use gas additives like Techron, and to use 89-octane gas instead of...

  12. 2000 AWM oil buildup on throttle body inlet side

    B5 Garage
Hello. In a long search to end surging problems at low throttle settings I finally found the problem. It was a badly carbon/sludged throttle body. This was after going through all the other reccomended fixes including new air filt element, clean air screen, new MAF, check for vac leaks. This...
  13. sludge buildup - mileage?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
i just recently purchased my 03 w/23k miles on it. i had the oil changed at 24.5 and i just did my first DIY at 28.4 w/mobil 1 0w-40. i was just wondering, if we assume that the previous owner even did get the oil changed diligently, and that s/he used dino juice, would there be sludge...
  14. Tar Buildup in cooling system?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Our 1996 Lumina has tar buildup in the expansion tank, so i would assume it is built up in the rest of the cooling system. My question is, Is there a product like auto rx that safely cleans cooling systems without fear of clogging? I know this is the wrong forum, but I think I may get more...
  15. Eclipse Buildup - Stage 1 Done (Almost)

    Anything Auto
Well, I have been keeping my hands busy building up the DSM. Its debadged. I went with an Apexi Worldsport exhaust. Nice deep throaty sound with very little droning. Road race engineering is still working on a downpipe and hiflow cat for me. Wheels are 17" Enkei RS7s wrapped in Azenis...
  16. Rough Idle on Cold Start & Carbon Build-Up

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
So after a second round of a really rough idle (as in misfiring) and blinking CEL on cool mornings, I took the car into the dealer yesterday. Based on my previous experiences with these symptoms, I was pretty sure I was having more coil pack issues (which have all been replaced already). It...
