  1. What did you do to your Passat today?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Today: Reinstalled the headlights that I clear coated yesterday. :) About 10 days ago, I clay barred the car so that I can machine polish the finish soon. Within a month, I'll paint and clear my front bumper (I painted the back bumper last year).
  2. Bad Alternator Confirmation & Questions to Possibly Repair

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Thanks for all your help, attention (to such a long post), and tips. I've been researching some of the things that I've read. (I am mechanically inclined, but electronics is my weakness.) I just watch a youtube video about how to replace that. I guess I'll figure out if my exact alternator...
  3. Bad Alternator Confirmation & Questions to Possibly Repair

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
2004 V6 4motion Hi folks, My story begins about 12~13 months ago. I'll state the facts, and you can tell me if these issues are from a possibility of one source, or if I may likely have multiple problems. 13 months ago the car would sometimes need more than one turn of the key to crank, until...
  4. Most effective methods to remove oil from spark plug wells

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Thanks for the ideas everyone! Here is what I did yesterday: Plastic syringe attached to a spray bottle tube (straw). That works pretty fast, and better than expected. You could spray kerosene down the holes as well afterwards which will dilute the remaining oil, then suck that up with the...
  5. Most effective methods to remove oil from spark plug wells

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Hi Folks, As many of yous know, it is common to find oil in the spark plug wells with these cars. The reasons why I am concerned: Enough oil can hydrolock the engine. Small amounts can put the final nail in your older catalytic converter's coffin (not ideal for new cats either). Foul up your...
  6. Timing belt replacement advice for low-mileage 2001 Passat

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I'm in the same boat..kinda. My timing belt was changed and is now due according to the time interval. I had my 96 GTI for eight years, and I never thought of changing the belt, and the body and frame rusted before I had any belt problems. A timing belt job would be more than what I paid for the...
  7. Parting out 2004 Passat GLX in North Carolina

    Parts For Sale
Thanks for getting back to me....I wish I responded sooner but, I was trying to see if I can fabricate brackets that would replace the broken tabs. Thank you too, AndreasPassat
  8. Parting out 2004 Passat GLX in North Carolina

    Parts For Sale
Hello, I need a front bumper support for my 2004 GLX. My zip is 12180.... The part is relatively cheap (even new).... I guess I am more looking for someone that can find me the cheapest shipper. Let me know. Thanks!
  9. What did you do to your Passat today?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I painted my bumper (off the car) reflex silver metallic. I guess one of the previous owners (or drivers) just didn't know how to park this car...the bumper was in bad shape. Not quite sure if I should wet sand and polish it...I guess I'll figure that out when I slip it on the car and see how it...
  10. What did you do to your Passat today?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
More like yesterday, than today, but... Cleaned out the sunroof rails and lubricated them. A couple of times when it was hot, the sunroof wouldn't close all the way....so maybe this clean and re-lube is a fix for that... Had a similar experience. A spray bottle's sprayer is your friend...
  11. Thanks PW, it has been a great place. My 2004 is total loss :o(

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
As of two days ago, my 2004 wouldn't start anymore. One scenario I can come up with is that the timing belt slipped due to a failing pulley and the engine is seized up. I could be wrong, but...that probability is haunting me. No, I am not trying to hijack your thread. Just that I am saying...
  12. Your newest purchase (non Passat content only)

    Off-Topic Forum
Bauer Vapor X300 skates. I guess I'll skate when biking is out of season (and vice versa)...you have to do some cardio to stay in shape, right? Burning 600 calories an hour seems like a good deal to me. Not sure if I'll ever play hockey again though. EDIT: one of the worst deals I've ever...
  13. What did you do to your Passat today?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
When Spring gets here, I'll be doing the same to my GLX (one side at a time). I've also experienced the oil build up in the spark plug holes, I try to extract as much of that oil using a spray bottle trigger sprayer. (As you may know, you definitely don't want that sitting or going into your...
  14. secondary hood release

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
When I replaced my fender, one of the things that I had to do was to remove the bumper, which means that you have to remove the pull. Being that I gathered that these pulls do break on occasion, I bought two in advance since they are only a $1.04 with free shipping on eBay. Two from two...
  15. Dot 3 in Dot 4 power bleed spongy pedal

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I paid a mechanic to repair my brakes before--if I had the time, I would have done it myself.... What I figured out later and what I can contribute is that when you have anti lock braking, there is that module that you need to bleed as well. Not that I have done it or can speak by my own...
  16. What did you do to your Passat today?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Was more like 2 days ago than today, but... I completed the fender swap. Found a fender of the same color like 8 months ago, and finally got around to it in the last week. Getting the hood latch pull off and then on again was quite interesting (for those that may not know, you need to pull the...
  17. Clean the PCV system?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
This really is a no-brainer. Parts can be sourced for so cheap off of eBay, that it is foolish to spend time needlessly fiddling with parts that are full of crap. New parts will be new and ready to be installed. Old parts may be cracked, will crack, or be so brittle. Last summer I replaced my...
  18. MISSING THREADS and other stuff ups.

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I would think that the mods know of this--no need to tell them. Perhaps the forum database has been restored to an earlier point. Maybe everything will be restored, or maybe we'll just pick up and lose the last week or two's posts. I've been on a forum where everything was wiped and we had to do...
  19. Whistle under acceleration

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I forgot to mention to you that a mechanic's stethoscope is your friend and can be had for only $3.99. I've used mine to verify computer fans, hard drives, heat systems, possible engine problems--I guess I am saying they are worth having for many reasons. Since the sound can be made even in...
  20. Whistle under acceleration

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I have the same exact problem....although I wouldn't say mine is "whenever" more like sometimes. Here is some logic for you: If it can be confirmed that only when using the accelerator and never coasting, rule out anything on the windows leak, windshield, body etc. Are you sure it can't whistle...
