  1. Bad Alternator Confirmation & Questions to Possibly Repair

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Sounds like you may have two issues. First you had a no start issue and as PZ suggested this may be the ignition switch. Then as time has gone by you have also developed as alternator issue. As recommended above you need to do a little testing before throwing parts at the issues. The ignition...
  2. How do you drain the brake fluid reservoir on a 2002 GLS 2.8

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
As jj said you are not accomplishing anything by just changing out the fluid in the reservoir. A Motive brake bleeder and flushing the complete system is the way to go. But, you can remove the screen with a little effort. There are 4 small tabs (marked with black dots) holding it in place...

  5. Engine noise

    B5 Garage
I am not a 1.8T expert, but That is Not a good sound. I would not start the engine again without verifying the timing is set correctly. Timing belt may have jumped a few teeth. When was the timing belt last replaced?
  6. Plug Wires, Coil, Plugs 2.8 ATQ

    B5 Garage
I agree with yl, not likely that your plug wires or coil pack is the issue. However I am a true believer in NGK BKR6EKUB spark plugs. So, if you want to change something... Your 441 code is for your EVAP purge valve (sits on top of the airbox). Takes just a few minutes to replace, just make...

  8. Calling all oil aficionados

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
What is "high oil consumption"? It's normal (not uncommon) for the V6 to use a quart in 5K, not including leaks. As stated 5w-30 or 40. I run 0w-40.
  9. V6 occult coolant leak...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
If it is the o-rings on the coolant pipes. PZ did a very detailed diy on this several years ago.
  10. Classic oil leak on B5.5 V6 (AMX engine) - advice please

    B5 Garage
I would inspect and clean what you can on the PCV system. It is possible on the V6 that your PCV is ok and your valve cover gaskets are just old leaking and need replacing. The health of the PCV system is largely dependent on how the car has been driven. Lots of short trips where the oil does...
  11. Whoever did the last timing belt job goofed it I think. How do I fix it?

    B5 Garage
VW used both Bosch and Valeo alternators as OE. The Bosch regulator will Not fit the Valeo alternator. However you can find regulators for the Valeo alternators. Read through this DIY for the clue in the last paragraph of the DIY. DIY: $5 Alternator Fix - replacing brushes (Valeo) Now do a...
  12. Whoever did the last timing belt job goofed it I think. How do I fix it?

    B5 Garage
Absolutely not! It's way too much fun fishing alternator out later. Just kidding, It would not be a bad idea to replace the voltage regulator while you have easier access. The regulator contains the brushes which are the wear item in the alternator. No need to spend the money to replace the...
  13. Whoever did the last timing belt job goofed it I think. How do I fix it?

    B5 Garage
Follow Tom's instructions to the letter and all will be good. Most importantly, If you are not certain ASK before moving forward. As for the crank timing marks. On the V6 they are known not to line up exactly. Remove the cover on the block where the Crank lock is installed and using an...
  14. 2001 ATQ misfires etc...

    B5 Garage
I wouldn't think the P0455 has anything to do Wirth the misfires. If it did it would not be limited to cylinders 3 & 5. Likely the coil pack is the misfire issue since the misfires are confined to 3 & 5 and they are on the same leg of the coil pack. Probably moisture (condensation) on the...
  15. part number for a clamp

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Yes, the hose is for your SAIP to the air box. The OE part is a one time use clamp N 102 077 01. But, just measure the OD of the hose and go to any hardware store and buy a SS hose clamp for under a buck.
  16. Intermittent Immobilizer issue - codes 17978 and 01176, Engine start is being blocked

    B5 Garage
Could be the Immobilizer antenna. You can try removing the lower steering column cover and reseating the antenna connector. I had the same issue a few years ago and I reseated the antenna connector and changed the battery in the key fob. No problems since. Also there is a timed lockout once...
  17. Need some info/help 2004 Passat 2.8 V6

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
The part they gave you is not correct. If you want to replace the heater hose pipe it is a different part. But, if you look at the images of the hoses there is a quick disconnect on one end of the hose. I believe that is what has broken off inside the hose. The pipe should be fine.
  18. Skid plate Part# question, and Canadian supplier

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I think you may have your pricing reversed. The "Q" should be the more expensive model because it has insulation or sound deadening added. Anyway, there are a couple aftermarket models for this that are thinner, but people say they work just fine. The hardware pack is separate and not cheap...
  19. Need some info/help 2004 Passat 2.8 V6

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
If I understand your post correctly. That the hose in question is still connected to the heater core and you pulled it out of the engine compartment and into the area where the battery is located. If this is correct you do not need the water pipe. What you need is a new heater hose. Question is...
