  1. Car is overheating

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I had an about 10 miles drive today and outside is about 75F. Immediately after I parked in the garage and kept the engine running, I put my hand (w/ two layer glove) on the outer edge of the viscous fan. The fan stopped completely with just a little effort. Stopped the engine and the fan could...
  2. Car is overheating

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Thank you all for the information. I will keep the car for now. I have been driving it for few days to work, 25 miles one way, and it has been running fine. I will keep playing with it and hopefully figure out the issue. I will keep you all posted. Anyone knows how to test the mechanical fan...
  3. Car is overheating

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
2003 Passat 1.8T FWD AWM engine. I bought the car back to 2008 with 44k miles. I remember it had an overheating problem years ago. The gauge would rise to the red zone when I was stopping for light. Then went down when started driving. Then somehow the issue went away. TB and WP were replaced...
  4. "Big spark" when removing thermostat housing

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Thank you cchief22, could you please explain more about the "... vertical position..." and why? I think the "correct direction" means the spring side of the tstat should be at the opposite side of the plastic housing. I can't remember exactly how I positioned the tstat regarding the...
  5. "Big spark" when removing thermostat housing

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
My thermostat housing had a crack and was leaking. When I try to remove the first of the two bolts holding the housing, a big spark came out and almost damaged the hex bit. I was not sure if the wrench occasionally touched the alternator. Tried again and made sure not touching the alternator, it...

  7. Slow coolant leak at the lower coolant drain plug

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I noticed there are few drops of coolant on the garage floor. The position is corresponding to the coolant drain plug. Does the drain plug have an o-ring? I tightened the drain plug but no luck. Anyone has experienced the same issue and what would be the fix? Thanks.
  8. Does anyone know the part # for this?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I think I found the part # on the web and it is 058133785B connecting the air pump metal pipe. Putting several broken pieces of the elbow together shows the part # too. Thanks..
  9. Does anyone know the part # for this?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I was working on my 2003 Passat GLS 1.8T today to replace the valve cover gasket. I broke one of the elbow pipe during putting everything back. The pipe is near the heat shield. I think it is connected to the combi. The rubber elbow is so hardened that when I lifted the metal pipe it just broke...
  10. Dashboard light issue

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
My daughter is driving my 03 B5 in her college, 100 miles away. She just called and told me the dashboard light is working the opposite way all the sudden today. When she turn on the car and headlight the dashboard light would turn off. But it would turn on when she shut the car with key...
  11. Check valve 06A-133-528D installation

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
This is the check valve I am asking for. Mine is installed the other way. It can tell from the shape of this valve. So the one in the pic would allow air travel DOWN (in pic) but mine is the other direction. If mine was installed wrong for that many years, should it cause any damage or issue? I...
  12. Check valve 06A-133-528D installation

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Thanks whirlpool and sirwired. I was changing the item 6A in the diagram. 6A needs to connect to item 25 (the check valve I am asking) which would allow air flow from 6A to pass 25. This diagram is a little different than my car. On my car, one end of the check valve connects to 6A while the...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I am replacing the PCV valve for my 2003 Passat 1.8T (AWM engine). for easy work I took off the check valve 06A-133-528D. The original one was broken years ago. I bought this one from dealer and my mechanic installed it. Since I had already took it off so I just checked it. I can blow air one...
  14. Coolant leak, water pump?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I am planning to replace all PCVs and clean those hoses. I am studying all related posts here and try to decide the right part # for PCVs. I found that the detailed write-ups are for AEB engines but I have 2003 Passt 1.8T AWM. gigi, if you look at the seal carefully then you can find the seal...
  15. Coolant leak, water pump?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Update - Got the viton seal from ECS and installed it yesterday. Did a few mile test drive and no oil on the ground this morning. Below picture was the PTFE seal I took off yesterday. You can see part of the seal lip toward inward and the rest part toward outward. It was a terrible...

  17. Coolant leak, water pump?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Just talked to a customer support @ECS and he confirmed that the seal I bought from the dealer is a Teflon one (TPFE or PTFE), 038 103 085C. I searched the internet and found bunch of cases of leaking from day one on those seals. I think I am going to order an "old style" one 026-103-085-D from...

Hi Tom, Could you please explain what "Probably damaged while getting the lip started on the shaft" mean? Do you mean when installing the new seal? Thanks
  19. Coolant leak, water pump?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
No matter what, I have to redo the job. But what could be the cause? I don't mind to redo the job but would like to fix the issue. Below are the causes I can think right now. 1. seal was not seated properly. 2. because I oiled the outer surface? 3. I scratched the shaft or bore or both. I...
  20. Coolant leak, water pump?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I don't think I scratched it although the way I took if off was not professional. I cleaned the camshaft and bore using shop towel before I installed the new one. I also checked for any scratch under a magnify glass. But I did lube the new seal with fresh engine oil on both inner and outer...
