  1. What to Do Now? 2003 B5.5 FWD 2.8L ATQ Tip/Auto 339000 miles, Cyl #2 dead

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
As it sounds like the car is in good shape and driven quite a bit, I would replace the engine. I would replace the front seal on the trans as well as get a rebuilt torque converter (since it's going to be out). That pretty much fixes the trans issues that might pop up. I've not see a 2.8 loose...
  2. Carbon plugging

    B5 Garage
Finally remembered to check out the heads. It looks like the port is behind one of the exhaust valves. Pictures did not show them, but I could barely see them with a flashlight. I don't know that you would be able to do anything with them with the heads in the car, even out of the car you would...
  3. B5 Needs Fixing

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
If the car has been sitting for a while, it's quite possible a rodent has made a home in the exhaust. For the turbo, you can by a used OEM turbo for about the same as an Ebay new one. There have been people who have had their Ebay turbos without issue for several years and other's who have not...
  4. Drivers side fender removal

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
It's not in the fender, it's comes from inside the car, to the left of the relay penal under the dash. It may be easier to pull the grommet out, grab the plastic tube with needle nose pliers and pull it through the opening (if it has enough length). If not, you need to remove the lower dash...
  5. Replaced Coolant Temp. Sensor but still p0118?

    B5 Garage
Sounds like he knows what he is doing if he can get it done that fast. My son's car was a 2 day job for the alternator in a small town in Ohio. Cost was not bad, but they took much longer than they expected.
  6. Head Gasket

    B5 Garage
Apart from everything mentioned, I would replace the rubber T in the PCV as I can see it has the original clamp on it.
  7. 02 2.8 30 valve cam timing check?

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
You have it right. Looks like the Haynes and the Chilton both have it wrong. I have the Haynes and found the issue years ago. Mid-engine Beetle looks like a fun project. I doubt anyone here ran MS on a 2.8, but there are probably several people who ran it on the 2.7T.
  8. New Noise that has me worried...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I would not worry about that little bit of seal if it fell into the crankcase. It's not large enough to plug the oil pump inlet screen. It's good to see an obvious problem with the CCT, at least you know it really was the issue.
  9. Replaced Coolant Temp. Sensor but still p0118?

    B5 Garage
You can pull the upper and middle left timing belt covers off to see the water pump turning, but the lower cover over the pump would require the crank pulley to be removed. Since you don't know that it's been replaced, I would change them anyway.
  10. Rear seat driver side fuel tank part and gasket.. what is it? I need the gasket and can't even find out what the part is called on google or anything.

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
I've been happy with the Conti and Gates belts, but not the Dayco ones. I drained and flushed my engines and switched them all over to Peak Coolant. No issues in 100K each on 2 of the 3, low miles on the 3rd (20K).

I guess you will find out soon enough. With a lifetime warranty, you could always swap them out. They do look like they are hollow shafts, if true, that should be a good thing.
  12. HELP: Brakes Squeaking After Lubrication

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Apart from the pins, you should not lube brakes. The anti-squeal is what you need, but as ylwagon mentioned, it could be the pads. I've had high-performace pads that squealed when cold.
  13. Best Fitment for a b5.5 Passat

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Larger wheels have the effect of making the wheel gap look larger. The 18x8.5 should work as long as you don't go larger than than the 225/40/18 stock height tire. I have seen some people rub with a 235/40/18 on the same sized wheel, but only with a 2" drop and when the wheel was turned. It was...
  14. Central locking problem Key fob nor key works...

    Volkswagen Passat B5 Discussion
Wonder if the cold makes them fail earlier or if they degrade due to moisture and road salt. Mine work on all 3 Passats, even the one that has been in the rust belt (Ohio) the last 5 years. Oddly, our 05 Golf has all 4 door locks not working and it had been garaged most of it's life and rarely...
  15. Methods for breaking tire beads? Changing valve stems, etc.

    B5 Garage
Only did it in a shop when I lived in NJ. We often had to grease the rusted beads on the steel winter wheels when we changed out tires. It was a lot of work for the machine, so I would not even attempt it manually. I remember the truck tires used a special hammer, like this one but with a handle...
