of course last night forgot to bring down my Bentley from shop/garage to search/follow up on pin outs etc. ,yes very familiar with PLC's , analog/ digital inputs, outputs, etc. and ECM is the same but wish I could see the programming logic...will check it out tonight. When AND IF I unplug ECM do I need to disconnect battery and or when I plug back in , etc. Basically is therea protocol for connecting/disconnecting?

Many people swear by disconnecting the battery before unplugging the ECU. Nearly as many never bother and have no issues.

there are numbers on the ECM when you unplug the harness. Only shows the numbers at each corner and you need to count up or down to find what pin you need.

I’ve tested sensor 2 today. All is good. I think I’m at the point of calling out the ECM as faulty. What’s your guys opinion on that and how close do I need to match the vin # and can I just plug and play?

Also my Ross tech showed up. If there is further troubleshooting that can be done with the knock sensor let me know.

I’ve been reading up on other posts here about ECU swaps.

    I have a 2001 B5.5 1.8T engine code AWM

I’m understanding that I can just swap out ECU as long as the numbers are matching.

Also how do I know if I have an immobilizer and does that make it difficult to swap or is that a dealer only fix?

I’ve found a near exact match online. All numbers match except the 2 numbers on bottom right. One looks like a date and then the other is above the “date” which is 8 numbers split in groups of 4.

Per the Bentley manual, immobilizer was added beginning October 2000 (build date). Any B5.5 will definitely have immobilizer (in the US, at least).

The RFID codes are actually stored in the instrument cluster; it tells the ECM that a valid key is present. I don't know if swapping the ECM requires anything special.

    Someone here knows...

Swapping the ECM with immo3 (probably what you have) requires the PIN for the ECM. The Ross-Tech site has the instructions and also the info on how to tell what immo system is present in the car.

I have a spare ECM with PIN from an 2001.5 AWM tiptronic if you can't make anything else work.
