W8 Torque Converter- Will it happen again?

I hope my torque converter fails soon- AGAIN, as a trip to my local dealer (which operates, at least people wise, like an Indy!) revealed to me.

When I purchased the beast in Seattle in April of '07 the first thing I did was contact the dealer that originally sold the car to get a warranty history. They were unable to give me the hostory due to "privacy" concerns, as if the car was a medical patient and I was asking them to violate HIPPA privacy laws! I couldn't believe it. So I contacted the indy dealer i purchased the car from to see if they could do anything about this. Of course, i have not heard back from them to this day. Oh well, I thought.

So I just happened to be picking up a part I had ordered through them the other day, and as I was talking to one of the service guys I thought what the heck? maybe he'll pull a history for me. Sure enough his reply was "Of course I can do that. I mean its YOUR car. You ought to know the history of the vehicle, right?" I love this guy. He proceded to print the entire warranty history for me from my VIN.

As he was looking through the report, and we were both agreeing that it would be good for the TC and the cam positioning sensor to fail before extended warranty was up, he noticed the engine had already been pulled twice at seperate times for these two part replacements! TC at 34,000 and cam sensor at 46,000 (I give or take).

I was told the average life span of these two hot items is roughly 35-40k. Here I sit at 78,206.....waiting. Will I be a "lucky" one? Time will tell.

    Wanna place your bets?

hmm? the engine has to be removed for the cam position sensors?
    weird.

i'm placing my bet on it not failing before the warranty is up, and failing RIGHT after that marker.

    100 grand! Of course- its a W8!

That's 100 grand. Miles or dollars- whichever comes first!

So you see why my question is valid- Will it happen again???

    heh, that i do.

well, if worst comes to worst, you can always leave it in neutral, and put a brick on the gas pedal and leave it redlining. that'l blow it for sure, without counting the miles

Hey uu, don't be so pessimistic. All is not lost! I made a one time investment of $1000.00, and my torque converter troubles are a thing of the past.

You can do the same, and be worry free.

not having a W8 and not knowing what you speak of, can you elaborate?

does anyone know what he's talking about, investing $1000?

is anyone listening? is this thing on?

park + brick on gas does much worse, and is much safer to perform.

99blackmagic, I'm sorry to mislead you, I was poking a little fun at my friend uu8.

My first W8 had the Tiptronic, I traded it in after two months for a W8 with the 6MT.
I paid $1000.00, plus trade in, for the new one.

Are ya kiddin' me, Stewart? $10-20 bucks at the local hardware store, a half an hour's DIY, and I'm back on the road.

As Stewart correctly points out, there is no escaping the cost of repairs. A dollar spent on either a torque converter, or a clutch, is a dollar I can't use elsewhere.

I don't worry about it, I put a few bucks aside every month just in case, and if it fails that sucks, but oh well.

If it doesn't fail, the money saved and the W8 will make a nice down payment on my next car.

    There's a 6.0 W12 sitting at Westside this morning.
Black and Tan, but sadly it's not a 4 seater.

wanna make your money back? I'll make you the same deal! my TIP even comes with a free brick for the gas ped.....

I'm at a crossroad with my car. Definitely don't/can't pay for TC after warranty is up. But I love the car and want to mod some more. 78k and counting, though. Geez! I sound as bad as Sal29!
