Just moved to Hong Kong - 1.8T or NOT?

Hi fellow VW fans in Asia,
You must get these kinds of requests all the time "new-guy-needs-help" kind of thing. But, I can tell you, this is one of the few places I feel I can trust to give me some sound advice. If you have time, please give me a few comments.

    Here is my situation:
First, I am not new to the Passat, or to VW's, however I am new to Mods. Second, I have just moved to Hong Kong and I would like to take this opportunity to fulfill a longtime wish of buying a pre-owned Passat and Modding it to my heart's desire.

    So, my questions are:

    1) I am looking at a 1998 1.8T. Any problems with this early B5?
    2) What important things should I have checked before I buy?
    3) What early Mods would you suggest? I believe the example I am looking at is "stock" except for a Sebring Exhaust and some 17" Enkei BBS reproductions (Enkei Bortex). I have no idea if any work was done to suspension, chip or breathing.

Thank you very much for your assistance. Much appreciated,

    Regards,
    Jonathan (vdubfan)

i think 1998 is too old in hong kong, will have a hefty maintenance /repair bill.
