    Rally Passault

    I am building a rally Passat. Yes it's a bad idea, so no need to rehash that here :-) It is a 2000 4motion wagon. I am specifically interested in what people have done to raise the car slightly. KYB GR2 shocks and struts have been recommended, as has a larger tire size of 205/75/15. I have read many posts about this, but seen few actual results and heard little feedback. I have read that raising it more than an inch via suspension lifts is not recommended due to drive axle wear. Any experience with this is welcome.

    Ideally, custom springs are your best route if you really want to even small jumps/bumps. You would need about 600# springs up front to stop the car from bottoming out along with Bilstein or Koni shocks if it gets airborne. You would also need a good strong skidplate as the V6 leads with it's oilpan. I have gotten my Passat airborne over RR tracks with 500# springs and did not bottom out, but it was not a steep drop off. Also, the Tip trans will not survive the abuse very long. My TC went out at just over 100K.

    PZ, thanks a lot. I'd found the first three. The last two are very valuable, and the 2nd to last thread reaffirms the one size up 205/75/15 tire idea. If there's money left over - and I'm thinkin' there won't be - we'll look at front struts and then rears...

    Torque converter... yes, we've just replaced the 01V's filter and fluid with Royal Purple ATF MAX. It has me more concerned than the engine, although it shifts quite smoothly. I programmed the Euro shift pattern in, which is nice and will mean less tiptronic use.

    This will be a rally where we've gotta be sensitive to when we should be driving hard and then driving really friggin' hard. We'd like the car to make it through two 250 mile long races. Anything else is a bonus.

    Then I would add and external trans cooler either in-line with the current one (in the radiator) or just run the external to keep the trans temps down. They heat up pretty fast when drive hard, mostly just from the TC slippage. If you can keep it in Tip mode, it will run a bit cooler. Once I replaced my TC, I drove 11K over 2 months including lots of mountains without issue. Since the 6sp swap I have driven 10K in 2 years
