Hoping to get some help on this annoying issue. I have an '07 Passat 2.0T with 120k miles. The "Stop Engine Low Oil Pressure" warning light comes on after about 20-30 minutes of driving. I checked the oil level and it is where it should be on the dipstick reading. This same issue happened last year and I was able to fix it by changing the oil. Is the oil sensor so sensitive it knows when the oil is starting to get old and possibly thinner?
I use the required Castrol 5W-40 full synthetic oil purchased at my local VW dealer along with a genuine VW oil filter. I change my oil every 10k miles/1 year, whichever comes first. I just changed it last September 2016 and have driven it less than 5k miles since then. I should be able to go the full year on this oil change. I've never had an issue like this with any other car I have owned. Has anyone else experienced this issue? If so, please let me know what you did you resolve the problem short of changing the oil.
You need to find the reason for your low oil pressure. My guess is your oil pump shot. There is a reason VW redesigned this engine after only 2 years. It has major oiling issues. In the past month I've seen 3 I that all have had failures due to poor oiling. Cam followers, Cam chain tensioners and oil pump failure. If you have any mechanical skills and a few tools you can fix this issue. If not you have a couple options:
1) Take it to the dealer and for around 1500 bucks they will replace the oil pump with a new one.
2) Pick up a used pump and have your local mechanic install it. Should run around 600 bucks.
3) Pick up a used pump and put it in yourself. YouTube has a vid....
My Audi VW specialist says I'm effed! 08 Passat 2.0T TSI showed up with the LOW OIL Pressure warning and there's nothing do be done but put in a new engine. It is not the oil pump or the sensor. The specialist says it is a common problem with the TSI.
Never buying another VW
I would not accept that answer. Your "specialist" is comparing a TSI engine to an FSI engine....WTF? Please inform him you don't have a TSI engine. Then inform him you will be finding another mechanic that wants to do some true trouble shooting instead of recommending a $5,000 engine change.
Could it possibly be just the oil pressure sensor? I did have an issue with this engine when the HPFP cam follower shredded metal into the cylinder head which damaged it beyond repair. VW installed a brand new cylinder head under the extended warranty for this defect. At the time it was replaced, the mechanic told me the oil pump was not damaged. Now I'm starting to think maybe not.
Same issue, but my car doesn't start. It kicks like it wants to start on some startups it starts for about half a second then it fails. I'll start with an oil change. I cant run a flush until I get it started. If need be I'll be taking apart the oil pan.
Same issue. The warning light came after I took the car to the VW dealership for an oil change then I get "Stop Engine Low Oil Pressure". The sensor was changed but the problem persisted. In the oil pan the mechanic found shredded bits. It doesn't look like their natural habitat:
The only solution that the mechanic is offering now is to change the engine. Passat 2009 110k.
