The auto-lock feature bit me tonight.

I've got an '06 2.0T. When you unlock the car and open any of the passenger doors, then close them, the doors automatically lock again. Nice feature as long as you don't leave your keys inside the car. With this in mind I'm always sure to make sure I have the keys on me before closing the door in this situation. I wouldn't expect this feature to also work if the keys were in the ignition with the engine running, but hey I've been wrong before so why not.

Tonight my wife and I were visiting some friends. When we arrived I did NOT lock the car. When we left, we opened the passenger side rear door and put our 6 month old daughter into her car seat. Via the passenger door I put some things on the passenger seat for my wife, started the car (it's cold out) and closed the door. With the baby secure in her seat, my wife closed the rear door. Click. There we stood in the cold darkness, with the car running and our baby locked inside. Friggin' great! Fortunately AAA took the issue seriously and had a guy there in 15 minutes, and with the car running and the heat on...the kid was safe and sound.

Needless to say I will not make that mistake again, but I have to ask...is this a normal Passat 'feature'? Can the auto-lock behavior be altered or disabled? I can understand the auto-lock thing if you just open and close the door but when the car is running? I can't think of a good reason that this would happen, but maybe I'm just dense.

If nothing else hopefully this will serve as a heads up for any other B6 owners that weren't previously aware of how the auto-lock feature behaves in this particular scenario.

This can all be fixed using the MFD like Klaus said. You can VAGCOM the car like I did to make all doors stay unlocked when you exit the car(while running).

The car will automatically lock the doors when you exceed 5mph.

If your afraid of being locked out of your car just turn off your car and take the keys. If you read the manual it says to never leave your car running while your away from your car.

 :D .

I went into the setup menu and changed it from whatever setting it was on to all-doors unlock when you take the key out. The auto-lock behavior is now completely different (in a good way!) than it used to be! I'm actually starting to trust that it won't do anything silly. When I have time I'm going to set it back to what it was before, and test some different scenarios including the one that happened with my daughter inside, to see exactly what happens and when. Maybe it's just something funny with that particular setting. We bought the car used so the original owner may have played with it some. :hmmm:
