So I noticed a clunking coming from the front of my 05 Passat wagon. I drove it home, parked it in the driveway, walked away and heard a big POP! I walked back and saw this.
Upon further investigation this is what I found.
Is this something common on these cars? This car has 119k miles on it and has had a pretty easy life. I gave an 02 Passat to my nephew that now has 278k miles on it and it never did this.
My right front coil spring broke on my '07 Passat last fall with 115k miles at that time. I asked the VW service advisor if this is common and he said they see this happen periodically. They tried to convince me to replace both front coil springs but I insisted on only replacing the broken one. I've owned many cars over the years and have never had a coil spring break. I really enjoy driving my Passat but these German cars tend to be not very reliable as they get older.

I'm guessing that you've never had an older Ford or Chrysler product? Historically, their spring corrosion protection sucks. Hell, I remember late 80's-early 90's Hondas being horrible for it, too.

There is a slight amount of surface rust on the inner side of the coil there. If that's the source of the failure then there's real problems with their spring steel.
Like I said, my nephew is still running my 02 with 278k on it and no springs ever broke. That one has been in the northeast since it was new. That car actually still has all the factory shocks and struts on it.

Search the forum for "www.dotamatic/1BE" and you should see the AT is for the 1BA OJJ weight class and the BN is for the 1BA 0JM. OJM is rated for about 230 lbs more than the OJJ rating. My V6 FWD Man has the OJJ spec so the OJM may be stock W8 models.
Thanks for that info! I found a whole used strut assembly on eBay that I bought that was the AT spring (in the picture I thought the yellow paint was green). I went that route only because I needed the car fixed asap because it's my wife's winter car and she freaks out if she doesn't have her AWD with studded snows.
Now that side is at least a 1/2" lower, sometimes 1" so it's obviously too light of a spring for my car. I have the correct spring on order and will do the swap when the snow tires come off.
I'm thinking the OJM spring is also for a 4 Motion V6 with the heavier Tiptronic auto.
