I don't even know what they're called to properly search for it. I get a ton of stuff about headliner, and door panels, but nothing about this rubber piece with fabring sagging all around my headliner.
Why did this happen? Heat? Cold? Warped?
What is it called, how to fix it?
This is common. The problem is that the sagging part is also important to the effectiveness of the side air bags = seal it up nice and the air bags won't fire right. You can try to push it back....doubt it will stay.
I don't know if I really care about side airbags. This is the first car I had that has side airbags, and I come from a generation where cars didn't even have seat belts lol. I just wish there was a DIY or something before I try to use glue or other stuff to make them stay.
only solution is to replace the whole seal on the body door opening. it comes as one dealy.
or just pull the fabric trim part off and make do with black rubber seal exposed. it aint that bad really.
I certainly wouldn't attempt to glue it. You'll be gluing that piece to the headliner fabric and that simply won't hold it in place. Not sure what the solution is other than getting with sipes216
Mine is doing the same and until it really drops down I'm not worrying about it. Annoying cosmetically but that's about it.
I'm also from the older generation where airbags weren't around but cars are built differently now. I for one certainly want them in a side impact.
I am a retired medic and FF so I know and have seen 1st hand what an airbag can do and has done.....I agree with Tom in that you don't screw with these micro bombs.
I personally don't like them when working around them but I am sure glad they are there in a collision. As a 1st responder you have no idea what it's like to extricate someone from a crash scene and a bag goes off while you're cutting a pillar to peel the roof or door out of the way.
Last year in my electronics class we set off some loose air bags. We took a bag that was from a steering wheel and "wedged" it on the corner of the shop door and the ground so that when the bag went off the bag will hit the door and ground causing it to launch itself. Needless to say we put a nice dent in the door, shot the bag 20 feet high in the air and 30-40 feet away from the door. I was always careful when working around air bags but because of this experience I have a whole new respect for them. Also the bag sounded similar to a gun shot in terms of how loud it was.
"Inner door seal" is the official VW name for what you are looking for. As far as reattaching the upholstery to it, it would probably be easier to go to a salvage yard and get a replacement (there are plenty on eBay). Then EOD and the K9 units can be avoided.
