I have recently discovered the consequences of driving too fast. so i went over two very tiny hills but they dropped off fast and all in all i slammed into the ground. The oil pan is for sure damaged, ill find the instructions for that later, but so far none of the things ive found look like my oil pan. I currently drive a 1.8T manual 5speed on a 99 wagon. as far as i know everything is still OEM but idk. ive only owned it for a year. Does anyone have a picture of the underside of a 1.8T manual without its belly pan so i can ensure that its the oil pan, or can anyone tell me what else could have broken and caused oil to absolutely gush, i have none left in my system and a big chunk of what i believe is the oil pan was found on the side of the road.
And lastly does anyone know of any other systems that could have been damaged in a very very hard bottoming out?
Oil pan, oil pump, pick-up tube for starters. if you ran the engine long without the oil, keep adding parts.... check transmission pan too - if dented...plan on repairs.
I would think you would see where that chunk of metal came from if it came from your oil pan. X's 2 on Mtech. Check where your oil filter mounts. I have an oil cooler there but not sure if the 1.8's have one. Check all underneath for any fresh dent's scratches and what not from bottoming out.
Thankfully i didnt drive on it long. The piece is from the oil pan, now its just a matter of getting my car home and working on it. Anyone know the cheapest place for oil pans? typically i use RockAuto but sometimes google searches pull up cheaper items
Look up the part number and then do a search on ebay. I find used VW parts listed from salvage yards on there all the time. Most of them will offer a warranty of some sort if it's damaged or non-functional. The classified section at the VW Vortex forums lists a lot of used parts from people that part out damaged or totaled VWs.
Does the 1.8 have an upper oil pan? That is when it gets expensive. If you still have a leak after you replace the bottom oil pan, remove the upper and look for a hairline crack.
Aaaaaand now i got my baby home but... the entire bottom of the oil pan is gone. including where the oil level sensor would be. i do know that i have received a low oil level alert on the dash before (via oil light) is it possible for this to have happened without the oil level sensor attached to the bottom of the pan? no there are no wires or anything hanging around the oil pan.
Your engine most likely never had the sensor installed, not something that was part of the standard package for our cars in North America. The aluminum casting of the oil pan has the ability to accept the device, but that's because it's cheaper for VW to have one casting design to serve all potential markets....and leave the choice to fit the level sensor for those markets that demand such a feature.
My 99 1.8t manual has no oil level sensor on the bottom of the oil pan. I'm not sure when they started using that sensor.
You need to drop the starter, AC compressor and part of the sub-frame and lift or suspend the engine from above in order to gain clearance to swap the 1.8t oil pan. Not too insane hard to do. It just takes some time.
Alright, I've got a problem. There is a bolt I can't get to that's on the front end of the oil pan its buried behind this seemingly pointless plate. The bolt is to the right of the oil pan in the first image. Second image is the plate in question
I'm not trying to sound rude but looking at the pics and your original post I would have to say that your best bet is to have your car towed to a VW mechanic and have them fix this. Simply because you were in question about whether it was your oil pan that was damaged.
You ripped that thing open like a tuna can using a screwdriver. With it looking like it does you may have certainly damaged other things under there.
alright, anyone know what to do with that plate? i cant get around it, i cant move it? is it safe to cut or should i disassemble the belt system and engine mount?
A little short on time gentlemen, loving the help this should be the last thing
Alright, got all the bolts out, gave the old pan a quick tap and it fell... about an inch untill the front engine mount caught it. What can I do? i tried lifting the engine more and it did nothing, it just lifted all of it at the same time
Drop the subframe. Don't use the subframe bolts again, these are special one time torque bolts - but the replacements are actually cheap at your VW dealer
Sub frame and sway bar are low as can be, its the front snub mount. its catching on the square nubs on the back end
