i have a 2001 VW passat 1.8t, and when its cold i can hear the turbo whistle extremly loud and constant from 2-4th gear.... once it warms up the sound turns into a bad ass waste gate/ turbo backfire sound...
Sure sounds cool but doesnt seem right, Doesnt drive any diffrent... same amout of power and fuel econ...
The only thing i can think of is that few weeks ago when i was cleaning the engine compartment, i lost the secondary air hose that attaches the pump to the filter.... until i find a new one.. ziptied a few socks to it to make sure nothing big gets in... its just temporary... this is when i started noticing this sound more often... It has gotten louder and louder. i popped the hood today and notice some retainer clips missing, so im ordering new ones to get that buttoned down good.
Is this sound just being exacerbated through the air filter box not being tightened all the way down, and the lack of hose on the secondary air pump? Or is something wrong with my turbo?
Well, if the sound continues well after the SAIP shuts off (it only runs for a few minutes, and only on a cold start), my guess is you have a leaking flex pipe. Check the flex pipe, if it's bad either have an exhaust shop weld in a new one or replace the whole downpipe. (Also, if it's bad, check your motor mounts; bad motor mounts are a way for flex pipes to fail.)
I had that SAIP pipe pop off, and it didn't make any noticeable sound.
The sound changes when the SAIP shuts off, sounds more like turbo fart, or backfire... just blowing off the extra PSI, but i can hear it where before i couldnt... my guess is the sound is in the air filter housing because i am missing some retaining clips, dont know where they went
a new devolopement... The turbo whistle went to a wining sound... not like a normal turbo boost but like a mid pitch whine... i dont know how to describe it... i think my turbo may be dieing... no CEL or powerloss..
i have 2 1.8t's (2001.5 and 2002). there actually is a huge difference in between turbo sounds in both of them. the older one's turbo sounds amazingly loud, i love it. it's been like that ever since i had it (tunning 3 years now) and i've never had any issues with it, it's been always running without problems. now my 2002 turbo is much more quiet but it works just as good as the other one. tbh i've never put this much attention to it but i do like that louder sound
Take off the TIP and see how much shaft play you have. It should have slight play, just barely wiggle. Also look for signs of the impeller hitting the housing. Broken vanes and such.
My bad turbo has almost no shaft play but it leaked oil like crazy, sounded like a 30 year old electric drill and you can see where the impeller rubbed the housing. It also made no boost, even though the impeller spins fairly well by hand.
Mine Makes boost, idles fine, just makes a police car whining sound... at first it was an aswesome load spooling sound that slowly turned into this... i took it to the local VW specialty shop, he said it sounds like a loose hose, but you could have a slowly dieing turbo... just drive it until it gives... it burns oil but other than that... everything runs just fine... just sounds bad...
people are saying there is a turbo dentist sound, i guess it kinda sounds like a dentist drill.. but what gets me... The car runs absolutley fine... no smoke, no loss of power, no CEL, nothing.. just like a dentist drill sound or a RC car on steroids
its been burning oil for ever... the local vw guy says they always burn oil... but only about a 1/2 quart per 1500 miles... My only symtom is this odd sound.... and it all started after i fucked with the airbox, so idk if its just air leaking from the tubes when it pressurizes, or quintessentially is starting to go.
After i lost the secondary pump hose, i put a sock and zip tie on both the air box and hose until i got a new one because they are 120$ from my local VW dealer. The day after i lost that hose, and i started to hear like a blow off, when i shifted. Then after about 2 weeks it slowly turned into a really loud Whistle... like there was nothing after the turbo, sounded dope, then turned into this sound of like an RC car or eletric drill... and the blow off sound and really loud boost sound is gone... So i dont know if its my turbo, or something that is connected to the turbo.
Like i have mentioned above, i have no other syntoms then just this sound.
If it is busted i have 220k miles on the car and its about 1200$ to get a new one installed at the local VW shop, thats with OEM turbo...
I took the tip off an there is no play and spins just fine not hiccups... While everything is apart should I check anything else for this sound or put all back together and drive it till it goes away haha
I put everything back together cause i have to drive it tomorrow, i cleaned out the inlet with a rag and some simple green. Again everything runs fine, just has the stupid sounding spool, my guess is its that shoe string vacuum line, its all tathered and shit... or just some sort of air leak maybe through gaskets... i do not think the turbo is bad...
Well we can only work with what we're given. You told us the sound started when you broke some things under the hood; a logical response would be to fix those things and see if it goes away. You haven't done that. Remember, we're not there to look at your engine or hear the turbocharger. Generally, dentist drill sound = failing turbo.
Nobody gave me things to fix, feels like im talking to my self... i inspected the turbo vains on intake said and seemed fine, im trying to determent if its a bad turbo or an exhaust leak somewhere... cause i have no other symptoms other than sound
