So my buddy owns a yard. And he had an 02 Passat/1.8t/auto. He gave me the VIN I called, VW and they told me it was an AWM engine there. So I drove up and pulled the motor myself. everything went smoothly...
So I get home, put it in my 02 passat/auto/1.8t. Get everything in, everything fit except for one EVAP hose. I just glanced at the head stamp.. It said AWW. I was like WTF!... So my question is. I am getting all cylinders misfiring. Could this be due to the compability or no? I've changed coils/checked coil harness/changed plugs/checked MAF/cleaned TB/I sprayed the vacuum hose with carb cleaner (the revs never changed). I'm kinda at a loss here. Any insight would be appreciated.
I think AWW is a transverse engine from a Golf/Jetta. Not sure what the differences are between the transverse and longitudinal 1.8 engines are other than the oil pan. Sin e you got it in there maybe it's just an AWW head on a longitudinal block? Otherwise the pan wouldn't clear the subframe.
Not sure exactly what your issue is but there's no way an AWW engine was in a Passat from the factory. Do you have the ECU from the donor car?
As mentioned, the AWW engine code is found on 01 Jetta's/Golf's. Since everything fit except for an evap hose, I'm guessing that at some point, the timing belt broke on the new engine and someone used an AWW head instead. As far as I know, the heads/casting are the same.
I don't think you can use an AWW ECU on an AWM Passat. The AWW engine was rated at 150hp, the AWM was at 170 hp? You'd be detuning your engine.
So the new engine is just misfiring on all cylinders, but runs? You will need to double check your hoses and/or do a leak test. Did you do a TB alignment?
Hey guys, an update. My battery was a little weak. Started the car fine. But I went ahead and bought a new one. And it runs fine now :icon_eek: So I guess these cars are very sensitive to power.
Steve yes the evap hose is sucking in. I tapped into the turbo air inlet hose, where it is suppose to go.
Whirly I didn't do a TB alignment. I am getting a random misfire at WOT now only in cylinder 3. So I'm going to change out the coil and go from there.
If it's misfiring most likely you have a vacuum leak, not power related. I assume the engine is a AWM with a AWW head, like someone said before. That's fine, you still have a AWM engine, the heads are all the same.
There were a few different setups for the vacuum hoses, you probably need to remove some parts from your old engine and install them on the car now.
You also have to remember that a vacuum leak on the 1.8t can also mean a bad check valve. Those aren't visible. You need to do a pressure test and also listen for hissing while idling. A common one is the bleeder valve under the intake manifold. There are two hoses that connect to the intake manifold just next to the throttle body. One goes over to the suction jet pump via the L shaped hose. The other leads to the bleeder valve to the PCV. That valve is known to fail.
Thanks for all the info guys. I will do a pressure check later on today.
