    Expansion tank coolant leak

The 2002 Passat 1.8T had been leaking coolant from the expansion tank after shut down from a heat generating run. It seemed to be coming from the pressure release overflow tube at the rear bottom of the tank which had me start thinking bad to worst case scenarios - partially stuck closed thermostat, or defective water pump, or plugged radiator, or the worst of all cases, a blown head gasket or turbo. It turned out to be a very tight, small crack in the expansion tank on the bottom, near the overflow tube. No leak when cold, but with heat and pressure a drip or even spray.
$50 for a new expansion tank, a 15 minute install, and the problem is solved. It turned out to be the best case scenario.

How easy was it to change the tank ? Mine is discolored and I can't even see the fluid level.

Very simple, three phillips screws, two hoses easily accessible, and one sensor plug from the bottom of the tank. It takes ten to fifteen minutes.

When you replace it, make sure the inside of the hose is free of dried coolant. I would also use new clamps as the old ones can weaken over time.

I see Parts Geek has them for $22 - maybe now I'll be able to see my coolant level.
