How long does my radio stay on, after I turn the key off?

    So, yeah.

    Key on, radio on.

    Key off, radio stays on.

Key off, door open, radio on.

    Key out, radio turns off.

How long will my radio stay on after I've turned the key off?

I have a habit of parking my car in the garage and leaving the key in (but off) if I'm going out again later. But, how long does the radio stay on? At the moment I have to take the key out and put it back in again, to get the radio to turn off.

I don't want it to flatten the battery or anything dumb like that.

Does anyone know if the radio will shut itself off after a while?

    Thanks.

It will shut off when the battery dies. Or you can pull the keys out.

    Really?

Doesn't seem like a very good feature if it will just run until the battery is flat.

    Hmmm. Oh well.

I'd say 45 min to an hour. Mine does turn off by itself, I can verify that. But this is with the key fully removed. It gets annoying when your in the car actually listening to music and it turns off by itself.

By not removing the key you are keeping the entire comfort module active. You will run down the battery for sure (speaks from experience). At the very least remove the key and set it on the seat.

If the engine is off, the key is not in the ignition, and you turn on the radio, then it will turn off after 1 hour to save the battery. This might also be the case if the key is in the ignition, but I can't say with any certainty.

I know it turns off after 20 minutes if you have the key out, and turn the radio back on. Not sure how long it stays on if you leave the key in... you might set a timer for 25 mins and go back and see if you're really curious. If it is still on, I would assume it is gonna kill your battery and just stay on all night.

    Hmmm, OK. Interesting.

I might have to do a bit of an experiment over the next few days then - time periods ranging up to an hour I think.

If you don't pull the key it will stay on until the battery croaks... learned that one the hard way... more than once!!!

If you insist on leaving the key in the ignition, just pull the key out and reinsert it when you turn the car off...

i actually really like this feature. when i pull up somewhere and i am waiting for people, weather its for gas or waiting for friends or family, i shut off my car and without my music stopping i can listen until i am gonna leave again. and turn my car back on without the radio shutting off at all. the only time it will shut off when i am starting is if the battery is worn down enough that it needs to use all the energy to start the car.

I've got a solution for you, which im quite surprised no one thought of this one...once you've turned off your car, they invented a power button, press the power button and it will turn off your radio.

The company I work for has a Jeep Commander. If you're listening to the radio while you're driving, it will not automatically turn off until you've parked the car, turned off the engine, removed the key, and finally opened the door. I'm not sure if I like that idea more or less than the VW method.

That's even more of a change in behaviour than pulling the key out.

I don't like that at all.

I didn't get a chance to do some timing tests this weekend. Hopefully I'll get a chance during the week.

I do have good news on my side mirror though!

    A development!

So, I started the timer last night.

Checked at 20 minutes: radio still going.

Checked at 30 minutes: radio still going.

Checked at 45 minutes: radio still going.

Checked at 58 minutes: radio off!

I'll run the test again when I can - maybe tonight.

    I'll keep you posted.
