    '04 Passat 1.8t code P2181/CTS

I recently got a MIL and the code is P2181. From what I've read on here, that usually means 1 of 3 things:

    1. Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS)
    2. Thermostat
    3. Water Pump

Since the CTS is the cheapest fix, I thought I would start there. I was reading on here where it is located, but I can't seem to find it there. I do see what appears to be the CTS in front of the engine block on the lower driver's side on the hose coming out of the radiator. Is this what I'm looking for or is it to the rear of the engine block and can only be seen from below? Any help would be appreciated!

As an '04 I believe your engine code is "AWM". The sensor is looked at the top rear of the engine, beneath the black valve that looks like a hockey puck. There is a good instructional thread here - do a search for it.

The puck valve. Once you move that, you should be able to see it, just barely. Should be green with a greyish plug on top. It's back there, just tucked away. There is only one electrical connection back there besides the cam chain tensioner so find a wire and follow it back there.
