    Dashboard Removal

Does anyone have any instructions on how to remove the dashboard on a a 1998 passat 1.8T, the stereo wiring is fried and I need to remove the dash to see the extent of the damage. If anyone has removed the dash or replaced parts of the loom before and can offer any advice it would be a great help ??

Sorry I cannot give you a direct link to the pdf instruictions so follow this path:
Go to this web site http://volkswagen.msk.ru/
and on left margin Кузов / Body
    then Volkswagen Passat B5 (1997-2000) / Фольксваген Пассат Б5 (1997-2000)
and click on the line with Volkswagen Passat B5: Instrument panel, removing and installing (eng.)

^^^ Your dash wiring is not at fault for this, it's your CCM wiring under your drivers side carpet.

anyway, i pulled the carpet out and checked the connections etc to the ccm, dry as can be, no obvious signs or smells of malfunction

Thats what happened to me, the only evidence you'll get is oxidized copper on the joint tape. That wiring sucks and I would pull the bundle apart and inspect the wires. Also if that is the case, it could lead to problems down the road with tarting, locks, lights and battery drain.
