“That’s No Ordinary Passat!”
EDIT: Stattlich is SOLD... standby for new owner announcement/introduction in the Club B5 area in the next day or two... No sir, no it’s not. But perhaps you've seen it before online. I took the easy design and mechanical weaknesses out of this car and created an acclaimed example of what a Passat Turbo ‘Final Edition’ for the B5.5s should have been (most of it thanks to PassatWorld’s help! thank you!). Nothing overkill, but enough to change the character of the car and make a substantial difference without sacrificing quality. This car almost could have been proofed from the factory had they taken the ties off Friday and had a few shots of Chivas Regal. Now, put on a Thievery Corporation lounge soundtrack and let’s get down to it... I purchased this car brand new off the dealership showroom on 12/30/02, one owner. Free and clear title in my possession. Squeaky-clean CARFAX. 9/02 build. One of the last build runs that had a true black interior and HVAC vent switchgear lighting, and post-coilpack debacle. It saw mostly highway miles the first half of its life, then pretty much just easy city miles the last half. Garaged the last half, but you’d think since day 1 with the paint quality, even in black (annual Zaino Bros. polish applications). The black leather interior shows only minor signs of wear and is in fantastic condition with no fading (annual Zaino Bros. leather conditioning). The engine holds a tight vacuum, has a new clutch, and is chipped with a Wetterauer 1-bar socketed module (OE module socketed included). A recently replaced water pump (done with the timing belt and all requisite parts at 70k) failed and ruined the valves earlier this month. This has been fixed and the head has been rebuilt- the engine runs as just described, and better than it even did before the event occurred. Idles well under 1K rpm quietly and smoothly- very strong acceleration with a touch of turbo whistle and engaging light-action clutch. Lightweight flywheel. 710N diverter valve. New Techtonics Tuning high-flow catalytic converter last month. No CELs. K&N filter. New DuraLast battery last week with transferrable 2-yr replacement warranty. Freshly-polished Euro-spec bi-xenon headlamps and switch. W8 sunroof panel, Phaeton pedal covers, Phaeton roof antenna, Skoda Superb shift knob and boot, chrome console rear trim, OE coat hanger, thicker upgraded floormats, Blitzsafe adaptor on the CD changer prewire for RCA stereo inputs (previously wired for iPhone + XM, awesome sound), OE personal electronics console, 35% Sunguard tint all around. Original control arms still look good. New RAXLES on the front one year ago to get rid of the lame-quality OE CV boots. Koni adjustable shocks and Neuspeed Sport springs lower and firm up the car (stock suspension with only 40k miles included) with H&R Trak+ 8mm spacers on the rear bring the 18” OE Phaeton ‘Challenge’ wheels out to the corners for an amazing stance and unique look. Just put my third set of all-new Pirelli P-Zero Nero M&S 235/40/18 tires on earlier this year/few thousand miles ago. I should be able to include all the parts I “OEM+’d” from the car except the original 15” Wellington wheels and headlamps, many in VAG boxes. There is an electric trunklatch assembly and rear fog that I never got around to installing as well. You’ll even get a great car cover, and bonus Volkswagen banner to hang on the wall. The car is very fast and very nimble, almost like a 4-door Porsche, more like a larger FWD S4. J A great entry-level sport luxury sedan with timeless lines ready out of the box now for daily driver and long distance duties. There are a few interior rattles to chase down, a couple windows could use new tint in the next year or two, belly pan is absent after a possum decided to go for it (been meaning to replace with a Thor plate), but aside from typical-after-100k tiny rock chips up front and a couple minor dings, 1 hailstone hit on the hood, and a couple scrubs on the wheels, not much else is needed that I can tell. Anything it really needs is just cosmetic. If you are serious about the car, you may come test drive it and have it inspected by a third party. I have taken care of all maintenance necessary for the next several thousand miles (minus oil changes of course). I have all dealership records except for the timing belt and clutch jobs, which were done by a very reputable 1.8T independent specialist in DFW who does these on the side. Mobil1 0W-40 synthetic is the only oil ever used every 5k, with the upgraded Mann filters as soon as VW mandated- zero sludge concerns. Zero coilpack troubles, ever. This car has been more reliable than the average Passat on here. Overall condition of the car is an easy 9/10. I have tons of photos of it from a few years ago on a professional photoshoot (which you’ll receive on DVD), and will provide a fresh couple dozen as it sits now in the coming days (not much has changed). Car will be garaged until sold. Have both keys- one well used, one never used. Valet key and owners manual with radio code too. All said, this is nowhere near the kind of Passat you’re going to find on a pre-owned lot. It has been religiously cared for, and I care about where it’s going. Pricing is firm as a result. My hope is to sell it to another fellow enthusiast who ‘gets’ the car and will take care of it- not dump it in the local classifieds for someone who may not going forward. Reply or PM me with any questions- serious inquiries will be given my phone number later. Thanks for your time and considerations with this car- I look forward to hearing from you! ![]() P.s.: “So why are you selling it then?” Two words: Audi S8. I found a minty D2 in Denver with 53k miles, and it arrived this past weekend. First kid on the way in a month, wifey prefers automatic, more space a big plus, ridiculous power gives us the fun car we also wanted too. Will still get my stick shift fix with my 1986 GTI, but am really going to miss the Passat... Last edited by StattlichPassat; 10-19-2009 at 07:36 PM. |

G/L with the sale. Wish I had 8 grand to spare.
You will miss the m/t. I still do 3 months after taking over the wife's slushbox variant. (We bought a minivan for her.) Just ain't even close to being in the same ballpark. What a beautiful B5.5. |

Don't you tempt me, Paul! I'm married with a kid now! No more of these shenanigans!
![]() That was actually my original plan once I acquired an S8, but the wifey kinda put the kibash on that. Tiptronic steering wheel buttons are fun, but yeah, not the same... Thanks, Passit and Rabbit.

gorgeous car (runs to wife to ask if I can have it!) btw, get yourself over to Audiworld to the D2 forum...Gabor (TOZOA8 and PaulW are GODS THERE). I used to have a D2 Prefacelift A8...Hope the S8 has better luck than I did with my A8...but based on what I know, they seem like one of the best cars on the planet. Congrats. again, gorgeous car. Honestly if it was an auto, i'd probably be down this weekend for it. haha.

Nice ride. Now, if I can get a crane to drop something on my car when i'm not in it, I could use the insurance check to...oh wait, was that out loud? damn.

That was a few years ago.The radar detector and XM radio are gone, as are the 'PASSAT' and 'turbo' badges (de-badged, but buyer will receive the letters). Shift knob and boot were replaced with a gorgeous new set from a Skoda Superb. There is now a MkV roof sharkfin in place of the Sharan as well. I'm hanging onto the Euro plate as a keepsake. Otherwise, about the same. I'll be posting photos of it as-is this weekend. |

I'll keep it in mind, Jay, but don't hold your breath.
![]() And now... PICS! I took these in haste pretty quickly this evening, but can go back next week and take higher quality ones or others in more detail (just realized I forgot closeups of each wheel). Lighting was pretty cloudy, so these didn't come out as well as I had hoped/it actually looks. Few items to point out: the engine beauty cover is temporarily off but will be put back on. The wire down the drivers A-pillar is just tucked in- I'm in the process of removing this hardwire for my V1 radar detector. The XM radio is still in there but will be removed, as will the iPhone dock (and iPhone!). Dash mount for the latter stays (that's the personal console unit). On the W8 sunroof panel, the passenger light button doesn't work any longer, but I believe all light up on forced interior master switch (you would receive the OE panel as well if you wanted to go back). There is a scuff and minor lip curbage on the driver's rear wheel. In the short time I had, I did not vacuum/detail, get the door jams or tires cleaned- normally looks even better (washed last week). Paint was just polished with Zaino Bros. treatment a month ago, and the leather was last conditioned about a year ago. If you have any other questions, please let me know. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dchrisatkinson/sets/72157622433374983/show/ |
