Hmm, haven't seen that specific incident, but it certainly isn't new, I've seen a GTI and another passat on fire also

NOW THE REAL STORY....

Susan Johnson of Deer Creek, PA had an incident where her turbonator malfunctioned and caught fire. "I noticed that my car was really moving, then I heard a pop," said Johnson, 33, a VW owner for all her life. VWOA said the turbonator spontanously combusted when the mighty 1.8T output 500 HP to the wheels. "She was lucky that she upgraded to a big break kit," said Ken Hunt, local stealership mechanic. "If she didn't spend that $2000 we overcharged her she would have stopped 10 feet down the road." Johnson could not be reached for comment.

Crazy! I reckon this might have been started by a similar problem to my passat. For the last couple of days there has been a faint smell of petrol in the car, I popped the hood yesturday in a car park with the engine running to find petrol spraying everywhere after one of the seams on the solid fuel line had cracked!

Needless to say I promptly joined the AA and they came out and patched it up!

Dude you are lucky. Petrol is way more combustable than gasoline.

Probably fuel line or electronics that caused it. Doesn't look too severe like the infamous heated seat fires I have seen.

Does anyone have the part number for the fuel line system (the three rails running along the firewall)?

I was thinking that when reading this post. I've noticed a few people posted about their 02's having fuel line leaks. Looking at the pics it looks like thats where the fire started or is originating from. The car in the pics def could be an 02 as well.....

That issue is discussed here...

http://www.passatworld.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=205271

The question I have is what is so different from the 02' fuel line design in relation to say a 99 or 04 Passat if this is truly an 02 problem
What could they have changed to possibly cause this type of problem? I think someone who owns an 02 might need to do some comparisons with other model years to see if there is truly a difference. A recall might be in order as this is nothing to take lightly IMO.

Exactly...So maybe this is common in those years and a recall is in order. Certainly worth investigating for those who own the 02-03 model.

It could simply be a manufacturering issue with the line.
