First of all....who in the h@ll designed the airbox on a b5? What a bastardization and tangled mess of vacuum lines...etc.... Anyway, when installing an aftermarket air filter, do you leave that little "pre-filter" in there? Looks like it would impede the air flow. Thanks

Yeah, it catches quite a bit of crap  ... If you decide to remove it, I'd recommend putting some type of rougher screen in place to prevent major debris from entering the airbox. It's a hell of a lot easier to clean out a screen on the intake side than it is to open the airbox all the way  and vacuum it out.

Sparrow :suspicio: ? And I thought my airbox accumulated some weird crap, Wow. Good point about the drain, though...
Ya .. wouldn't be too good in a torential downpour to suck up a bunch of water .. I have seen traces of water stains in the air box inlet.

When I removed the screen, I also dremeled out the surrounding screen holder to make the entrance into the airbox smoother and slightly larger. In the article on Autospeed about good airboxes, one of the major things was how smoothly the entrance and exit were integrated into the airbox. After you remove the prescreen you'll realize that the entrance isn't so smooth.

I don't know how much it helped, but little things like that can't hurt(if you're removing the screen anyway).
