While I was changing my DV valve and DV vacuum hose, I noticed something that almost startled me. There's only about a finger and a half gap (about 1/2 inch) between the bottom of the bumper and the engine belts. I've bumped over those cement parking stops in parking lots a few times, and I wouldn't want to know what happens if I ever did that without my belly pan on!
Also, I forgot my belly pan last week after the control arm install, and at freeway speeds, the wheel liner on the passenger side tore away from the T25 bolt on the spoiler and began rubbing on the tire. Now I have this triangular shaped hole what's worn out; the driver side is fine only because I have this huge square hole so the air didn't build up behind the liner back there. Put your belly pans on!!!

Yeah, but in NYC you also see most people putting brush bars on the front bumpers of their vehicles. Or are those "people bars" or "cab bars"?
We had a similar street near us before it got repaved. It was so bad, residents on that street put up caution signs that looked like the real DOT signs on the side of the road. But these proclaimed: "Caution, simulated moon surface next 1/2 mile". Needless to say, the city wasn't too happy and confiscated them after a week or so.
It's like the razor blade approach. Sure, they sold X Passats, but do you know how many $5 pieces of plastic they'll sell for $160,and how many $1.20 sets of fasteners they'll sell for $20 each? That's serious cash money!
Apparently a couple of fastening screws vibrated loose on my belly pan and the front edge dropped down on the freeway one time last year. The noise scared the sh*t out of me! :nervous: But I was able to pull over to the shoulder and reach the remaining screws to get the thing off, haven't replace it yet. I might trade it in this fall, maybe they won't look under the car!
After my 4th oil change, the Jiffy lube dude put my belly pan in the back seat. There wasn't enough screws left to bolt it back on. Dealer guilty as well! Dealer charged me 35.oo for a set of screws.. What a rip!
My daughter in law just smacked a loose tire in the road at 70 MPH last week in her 99 variant. Ripped the belly pan to shreds, busted both wheel well liners and destroyed the metal pan support thingy. Ripped off part of the grill as well. I looked under the car today and found that the Air conditioning hoses coming out of the compressor were bent up against the compressor housing and were almost chafed through. Another few days and it would have blown the AC charge. Please check yours if you have hit anything lately. The belly pan probably protected these hoses somewhat during the incident. The damage is fixable at home but we are dreading the part costs.

I have this too. I had my oil change the day before a 700mile trip, and when I got back home discovered my belly pan was improperly fastened and the fender liner was loose allowing the tire to rub.
I don't know about belly pans...but I'll take a belly dance
That's good for an old thread.
