Clunky noise from engine box

Today I noticed a subtle clunk coming from my engine box when I get on the gas and then get on the brakes pretty hard. The only thing that I can imagine might be wrong is a tweaked/torn motor mount, but it doesn't feel violent or loud enough to be a motor mount(I've never had a broken motor mount so I wouldn't know how loud or violent it should be). I also noticed the noise when reversing uphill with the wheels cut. My buddy told me it could be something with the ABS, but the brake pedal feels smooth and steady when I get on it. Do these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? Any and all replies/suggestions welcome and appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

Re: Clunky noise from engine box (duboholic)

could be lots of things. by engine box, do you mean engine bay? if so, how are you sure it's coming from inside the engine bay and potentially not suspension?

to test your motor mount, apply your parking brake, open the hood and have somebody watch the engine as you apply throttle and let the clutch out. if the motor moves a lot it's probably a motor mount.

other things to check include the control arms. raise the front end and move the wheels (both east-west and north-south) to look for play in the joints. it could also be as simple as a loose wheel or something look inside the engine bay (like the battery)

doesn't sound like something ABS related

Re: Clunky noise from engine box (Medrosje)

Thanks for your insight Medrosje. I said engine box aka engine bay but what I meant is that the noise is coming from the front of the car. Anyone with control arm issues on their New Passats? I've been lowered on H&R Sports and Bilstein Sports since 400 miles and I'm now at about 14,300.

Thanks Again.
