Have just purchased a Panasonic DV navigation system for my passat estate (1999) - wiring seems straight forward except for - "connect Speed pulse lead to Engine Control computer" - anyone know the exact wire and where to pick it up - thanks for any help - Geoff (across the pond UK)

Re: GPS wiring problem (Scuba2001)

Yeah you need to tap into the White/Blue Wire in your Cluster connector.

Jwil Write Up
"-Using a 3M Scotchlock connector attach one wire to the WHITE/BLUE wire at pin 3 of the blue cam lock connector attached to the back of the instrument cluster.

**NOTE** This wire is for speed sense, without this, the navigation unit can not function. This MUST NOTbe connected if your radio is equipped with GALA speed sense. A short circuit could result and cause significant damage to your car!"

This is the plug

And that is the White/Blue wire you tap into for VSS speed sense

Good Luck!

Re: GPS wiring problem (Paradigm)

For some systems, it has to recongnize when the car is at a stop so it can pinpoint its exact location. Granted, some systems are more intune with satalites, and such, and use different software to navigate through areas, and calculate its own speed. For these systems, it need the speed/brake sense wire to operate correctly.

quote:
Can someone please explain why you need this wire hooked up?

My Garmin GPS V doesn't need anything hooked up to see the speed, it actually tells you the speed the car is moving right on the screen.

It is so that when you are driving through tunnels, the car can maintain your position by calculating speed. It also allows a faster startup time, because it doesn't have to hunt for satellites before providing directions, it only needs last known position, compass heading, and current speed.

It makes the GPS a lot more fault tolerant.
