so far i have been looking at the following:

1990-1991 Audi 90 20V quattro (with 5-spd, and 165 HP 5-cyl)
1993-1995 Audi 90 quattro with the 12V 2.8V6 (172HP)

im leaning tward the 5-cyl 90 because it is cheap

any thoughts?

also i plan to keep the car for quite a long time and possibly turn it into a project car

my Brother has a 93 audi v6 he got new, and has had lots of problems with it, that could just be a lemon in the bunch but he had to replace the whole motor at one point, That is the only experience i have with the car

I'm pretty happy with my FWD B4 90
The older 90s have more upgrade potential and less weight though. Probably less reliable. Project car for these means swapping in one of the factory turbocharged engines, which is a lot easier on the cars that came with a 5-cylinder.

Re: closing in on a new (b5-turbonium)

I highly recomend going with the 20V I5 rather than the V6. The first gen V6 is not known for reliability or longevity. I'm sure some of them are near perfect in terms of relibility, but they are not known for being so. OTOH, the who range of I5's are known for incredible logevity and overall reliability (with the possible excetion of the 20VT, it has a few electrical issues...Hitachi FI)...

quote:
it is almost settled.....1990 90 20VQ...Pearl white

Nice.. I saw one of those when I went skiing a couple weeks ago- we were driving an A4 1.8T quattro, hauling ass up the mountain...the 90 (in pearl white) had a caractere front spoiler and some decent rims.. it was keeping pace with us and passing each other..we kept commenting on what a sweet car it was...

I think you'll be pretty happy. The older Audis are really a steal in todays market and they look amazingly modern with a few minor mods. Lots of project car options too..

Just came from this site; maybe something here for ya...
http://www.audiquattroparts.com/audi%20market%20place/audi%20market%20place.htm#8090
Those "nordic" folks up in MN have plenty of Audi spares and such. Really a good bunch of folks; I ordered stuff there and had to return some hoses; no questions asked and even thoug I beyond my 14 day return, they charged me a very small restocking fee. From the phone calls, it sounds like these guy's know their quattro's pretty well!

The Lemon Guide I looked at right before buying my 2001 GLX V6 (I was looking for an Audi A4) heavily suggested staying away from the Audi 90 and Audi 100 because of major problems with the engine and the electrical system.

It said that was the reason why Audi abandoned both lines for the A4 and A6 lines to replace them.

Actually, the Audi A4 used the same engine as the (B4) 90 for the first two years.

What guide was that?

I'd agree with the second part, there are all sorts of electrical oddities with these cars. However, you could say that you should stay away from <insert ANY 10+ year old german car> because of the same issues...

Some more input (just what you need). I looked at the exact same car (20V q / pearl white) years back but eventually shyed away from it given the extreme high cost of replacement parts and that particular car's history of rear drive shaft issues (based on recommendations from an extremely competent Porsche / Audi tech). On the other hand - you can't kill the engine. My parents have an '87 5000 CS Q with over 240,000 miles on the 5 cylinder turbo motor (the only part of the car which nevers needs work). Audis old 5 cylinder motors are very reliable (why do you think Volvo bought the design

Go with the 5cyl 20v, you won't regret it.
The car is a monster

Re: closing in on a new (B5sport)

Actually, BLAU is overpriced on many things, but their great to work with. Take shocks for example, they are about $60 too high. Also for factory parts, you can't beat PMC for prices: http://performancemotorcars.com/ best prices around...
