    Hard to turn Steering wheel

    Good day all,

I recently had my power steering go thru a change when i noticed that its hard to turn the car with the steering wheel. I assumed it was low on fluid and after buying the specific fluid for this car and topping it off, the problem still persists. It is very hard to turn the steering wheel when not in motion and it lets up a little when the car is moving. Anyone recommend me checking anything to properly diagnose the issue. I had this one guy look at the power steering fluid and flat out said, it's the pump. I have had VW long enough to know that that was just an assumption.

Check your air pressure on your tires. Somebody had a similar issue when his tire was going flat.

Is there any belt squeal? Check the belt tension to make sure it is tight.

If the pump is working, there should be a hiss or similar noise from the pump when the steering wheel hits the stop in either direction. If you don't hear any such sound, then either the pump isn't working, or the rack has a problem. Also try the steering with the car stationary and engine off, then start the engine and see if you can feel the hydraulic assist.

One quick solution is that you needed your power steering flushed, which would get all of the gunk out of the system. you could have needed that instead of just topping it off. i agree with ylwagon as well in the fact that you should try to hear the hiss from the pump when you turn.

Here is a write up on how to perform a power steering flush ( Written up by Jay)
