If you read the instructions carefully, the handle is held by four screws; two from the front and two from the back. You have to take the door panel off to get to the rear screws.

Rivets, yeah, kinda dumb. Probably cooked up how much assembly labor they'd save vs. additional repair labor, and seasoned with more secure mounting. It's all a formula.

you don't even need to remove the handle, just the two big screws from the front side. Leave the handle attached to the door card.

As VAGguy said, handle can stay on ..

BUT .. if you're fixing up your loose fabric or broken leather and need to remove the handle, there are 2 screws that come off from the other side of the panel, if you don't and pull too hard trying to get the handle off, you'll just wind up ripping the screws out and breaking the threads.

in the information base forum, there is a post related to replacing the window regulators. it shows how to remove the front door interior panels.

Basically the same, except for the driver's door handle/switch panel. You have to pry out the inner part where your fingers rest, to release the switch panel. Then IIRC there's a couple of screws behind it.

The rivets holding the speakers don't loosen up over time and start buzzing like sheet metal screws sometimes do. Rivets also probably cut the installation time at the factory. Removing the rivets is simple if you have a drill and know the technique.

I'm having a window issue and just discovered these instructions.
Any chance that you have higher resolution images? The pics are so fuzzy.

    Anyway, I'm on step 2 (I think it's image 350) and have a question.
How do you remove the outdoor trim?

go to step three. The second pic is for removing the screws in the door handle. remove the torx screw in the bottom of the door and then pop the door panel around the perimeter starting at the bottom, then lift up and off the door.

Haha. I thought the instructions meant remove the door trim on the "exterior" of the car.

Ok, these are weird looking screws. What sort of screw driver do I need to remove them?

rear door panel - window off track

OK -so all of the post above have been helpful - however I still cannot remove the metal plate from the door to access the window track. Is there a trick or a special tool? I removed all the screws, disconnected the electronics and door latch - it seems loose, but cannot pull it away or move too much. I am afraid to damage it - nearly deforming the metal plate in an attempt to separate.

Any thoughts on this would greatly be appreciated... thank you.

If you've removed all the bolts (they're a sort of copper in colour) then all that's left to do is unbolt the door lock and waggle the window runner/guide out of the hole.
