Climatronic codes revealed!

I recently spent a some time in my car comparing the diagnostic values in the climatronic display, vag-com climatronic measuring blocks and the B5 bentley manual.
The values below are the Climatronic diag codes for unit 1J1 907 044 in a '97 Euro Passat B5 1.8T AEB (I dont know if this is the same module as in the US models or newer B5/B5.5 models)

Replying to an old message, but I have a 2002 VW Passat GLX and the Climatronic has 72 channels. I would assume the first 40 you have noted are what you listed, but what are the rest? Also, if you press "Fan down button" + "warmer/hotter button" + "ECON button", it takes you to another diagnostic screen with I believe 12 channels that can all be changed? Any ideas on this one? Does anyone know if there is a way to get to these codes in the "new" VAG climatronic? (the one which uses dials like in Golf V/Passat B6/Skoda Octavia II)

40 Feedback value, cold end-stop, Footwell/Defroster Flap Motor
Potentiometer (G114)

Mine reads "---" but I know others have read -51C. I believe it's a calculated value and not a measured value.

Have you tried scanning the climatronic for faults?

Turn the key to on (no need to start). Hold down ECON and RECIRC buttons simultaneously. The display will show codes. Write down the three-character alphanumeric code like "4F8" and the two digit code "00". Press the red TEMP button to step through more codes. Write down all the codes you see. If you see "444", that means no problems. When you see code "000", that's the end of the codes. Press ECON to exit. Post the codes here.

Found codes - engine won't idle

Just replaced the ac compressor. now the engine won't idle...great. I pulled the fault codes and get 214 00, 466 00, 318 00, and 000 00.

Any ideas? I live in Houston, couldn't go without AC. Shelled out the money for the compressor, now this. I also read the MIL codes with an Actron. So far, it has shown P1581 and P1541. Both related to engine speed. No kidding?:banghead: Please help!

It would be good to know what car you have?

214 Hex = Supply Voltage B+
466 Hex = Engine Speed Signal
318 Hex = Air Conditioner Pressure Switch (F129)
P1581 = Idle Speed Contr.Throttle Pos. Basic Setting Not Carried Out
P1541 = Fuel Pump Relay (J17), Circ Open

If your a/c is working, the pressure switch code may have occured when you installed the compressor. If you disconnected the battery, more than likely that caused (P1581) especially if you have a 1998 or 99. You need a VAG-COM to do a throttle body adaptation. That should fix the idle.

Did you pull the fuel pump fuse with the car cranking of turn the ignition switch to on? That will cause P1541.

If you have access to a VAG-COM you can clear all the codes after the throttle body adaptation and see if the codes come back.

If you post where you are located, someone with a VAG-COM may be willing to help. It takes less than a minute to do yet the dealer will probably charge their standard diagnostic fee (ususally about one hour labor charge). The ECM should automatically adapt the throttle over time but it seems like the 1998/99s don't learn too quickly if at all.

You need a laptop computer, a cable like this http://www.alpha-bid.com/vagusb.html and the software and a license ($99) from www.ross-tech.com/

You can use the freeware version of the software but you will not be able to do the adaptation unless you buy the license or find a crack for the software.

Ordered the VAG-COM Cable

Will take a couple of days. Figure I'll need it anyway. I'm still worried it may be something else. I've had the battery dead or removed several times before, and never had this happen. PS - The fault code I listed was off by one digit. It is actually P1545, not P1541. All signs point to the throttle position sensor. Anyway to manually reset it?

I've tried the "door open, key on for three minutes trick" did not work.:mad:

P1545 is Throttle Valve Controller, Malfunction. Have you checked the electrical connection on the throttle body? Try cleaning it and reseating it. Other than that you will have to try a throttle body adaptation. If that doesn't work, it's probably a bad sensor.

I have yet to see a definitive answer on the manual adaptation question. Some swear it works while others say it doesn't. I recall reading that the key on trick doesn't move the throttle to WOT as does a VAG-COM adaptation. The person was monitoring throttle position with VAG-COM with the key on trick.

Like I said before, it seems that the need for an adaptation is more common on 1998s and 99s when the battery is disconnected although it doesn't happen every time the battery is disonnected. I have never had the problem on my 2000.

Nothing a gallon of gas and a match won't fix!!

:banghead:Just "drove" it to the AC Shi\op to get it charged. Have to drive it in Tiptronic mode to keep the rpm's high enough to get above 20mph. The clincher - they filled the system and the AC still doesn't work!:mad::mad:

So - about $400 down the drain and the POS still doesn't work.

"Drove" it back home with the flashers on - MPG indicator showing around 6.5MPG all the way. Car overheats as I'm pulling in the driveway.

Along the way, I noticed the speedometer would occasionally drop 10-20 mph for less than a second?:taz:

Any ideas before I get out the gas can?

Do you still get the Hex 318 code?

If you still have the 318 code, you can check the a/c pressure switch with a multimeter. It's located beneath the right (passenger) headlight. You may have to remove the headlight to get to it. There is a 4 pin connector on it. Pull the connector off. Check to see if the switch is closed across pins 1 and 2 and open across pins 3 and 4. If pins 1 and 2 show open, the switch is faulty assuming your refrigerant charge is correct. If it is open and you are sure the charge is correct, jumper the connector pins 1 and 2 and see if the a/c works.

Sure sounds like something is wrong with the throttle position sensors. Hopefully the adaptation will fix it. IIRC, there are two independent position sensors in the throttle control module so if one goes bad the ECM should use the other.

Do you know if the electric cooling fan was running when the car was overheating? Did you have the climatronic on? The fan should always be on low speed if the climatronic is on cooling mode. The fan should also come on if the coolant temperature is above about 200*F (low speed) and about 210*F (high speed).

Are you or anyone else bale to take a picture of this? I have a UK model, but still think it's behind the right hand headlight, as the compressor is below that area. But really struggling to see where the actual switch or connector is.

My switch seems to be permanently open, either cos the charge pressure is too high or too low, no matter how much or how little you put in (have tried reducing and increasing charge pressure slowly).

More good news!?!?

Thanks so much for your help. Checked the pressure switch, as you suggested. It appears to be fine. I jumped it and got nothing. Note: The "hot" wire to the compressor is a single lead connected near the power sterring fluid reservoir. Before I changed the compressor, I saw 12V at this line and jumpered the connection to the battery to ensure I had at least a bad ac clutch. Nothing worked, so I replaced the compressor. After checking the switch, as you suggested, I checked the hot lead again. It's not hot anymore?!?

The clincher - added a new CEL code - P0501 - vehicle speed sensor?

Hell in a handbasket?

Got the Vag-Com cable in the mail, tested it on the computer as instructed. But I can't get it to work on the car. I go to the first block, engine 01, and it doesn't appear to ever connect. It does some actions in the upper left corner, then gives me an error code. Says cannot communicate with control module. Help???!!!

513 is a code for the data bus diagnostic interface module J533. J533 provides the interface between the control modules on the CAN and the OBDII port on your car. The two digit 00 code doesn't provide any additional info as to what might be wrong with J533 if anything.

Can you connect an OBDII scanner to the OBDII port on your car and read the diagnostic trouble codes for the ECM? Do you have a check engine light? If you are not having any issues, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a VAG-COM, you could clear it and see if it comes back.

I do have a check engine light on but its because my cats are below their threshold.
The reason I did the check on the climatronic is because it is giving temp readings like -49 and not letting the air conditioning run because of it. How do I figure out which sensor is bad?
