Greets all:

This past Friday night I went out with a friend of mine who is in the market for a $40K car. Low and behold, as we passed the Audi dealer, they had the new 2005.5 A4s. Since my friend has a '99 A4 2.8, we dropped by to check them out and we were able to take out a 6 speed 2.0T Quattro out for a drive.

In short, the new motor rocks. It feels much more torquey than the 1.8T, and the midrange has much greater punch than the old motor. In the Audi, the motor has a sweet growl, and helped to make the A4 quite fun to drive.

As a bonus, this new motor, with the more precise fuel metering of the direct injection, is rated to get 31mpg on the highway. Considering the $2.35 and up gas prices here in the Bay Area, any mileage improvement is welcome.

I am confident this new engine will perk up the B6 Passat in a major way. What I am really salivating about, though, is what that motor will be like in the new GTI.

Doesnt really matter, because the new GTi, ugly as it is IMO, is still heavier...

VW just cant seem to get the idea right

I dont like the whole integrated turbo/manifold idea......turbo swap wont be all that easy now and will require new manifold.

Got a link to a picture of this? Doe it look just like what we have now, minus the flanges between the turbo and mani, or is it a whole new animal?

Its totally different, manifold and turbo are integrated into eachother.....anotherwords no K04s (maybe a posibility, but it wouldnt be no $800 part) and no adapters for ATP.

And we dont even know how hard VW made it for those that are planning to upgrade the turbo down the road....

I also drove the 2005.5 6spd quattro (with navigation, i should add!). I loved the car. My 2004 Passat v6 auto just doesn't feel right after that, and it has me wanted to trade in even though I only have 17,500mi on it.

Now I'm thinking about getting the A4, but I decided to come back to post about this, and decide if it will be worth waiting for the new Passat

I don't think the manifold/turbo thing will be that big of a deal. There will be a large market for a bare mani. It will show up on the aftermarket quickly.

Doesn't the turbocharged Neon come like that too? Change both as one piece.

I like the sounds of a 4 cylinder doing this.... from the Wetterauer site:

"We now offer a power advancement program for the newest 2.0 Turbo FSI (fuel stratified injection) enigne from Audi-VW.

The horsepower is advanced to 240 and the torque is increased to 360 Nm (265
ft/lbs)."

that sounds like chipped k04 performance in a car that is supposedly not much heavier than the B5.5 (40 lbs?) with a 6-M...good enough for me!

from UPsolute:
http://www.upsolute.com/db/new/datenblatt_eng.php?ID_Marke=2&ID=1457

the Passat should have lower driveline loss/better breathing as well (transverse motor)

Was scoping out the New A3's (sportbacks?) yesterday over at the training center, very clean engine bay with the 2.0T...cool car as well.

yeah, its a little heavier, but it's also 85% more rigid of a car than the current mk4 GTI. it also has a 4-link so it is more nimble handling. i'll take 200hp in a chassis that can handle it any day versus some old rabbit

What he said. The redesigned suspension will make it a drive like a much lighter, smaller car. I think VW's "back to basics" pseudo-retro attitude with the Mk V GTI will make it the best yet. Can't wait for the R36...
