    2006 Passat Smart Key

I have one Smart Key, and desire to own a second key. I see them for sale on-line (used), and wonder if anyone knows if they are generically reprogrammable at a dealer, or if there is a specific series or range of serial numbers that are eligible to be re-programmed to work with my VIN number. I called several dealers, who are all clueless, except to note that they are required to give the VIN number when ordering a new one from VW National Parts. That made me suspect that not just any used 2006 Passat Smart Key will necessarily work with another car. Anyone know the definitive answer?

Why do you only have one? Two keys usually come with the purchase; at least they did on my '06 Passat.

I think if the key came from a same year passat you should be ok, but no guarantees.
Previously, if a key had been programmed to a golf ecu, and then was wanted to be programmed to a passat, it wouldnt work, this also depended on vin numbers, even with both the keys having the same part numbers. All im saying is, it used to be a risk buying a secondhand key, this probally hasn't changed.
