Or Fox or Rabbit? The answer: they're not.
Neither of those are made anymore. The VW Fox was actually a rebadged Audi Fox, hence it brought with it the similar name. VW felt at that time they needed a larger car in their lineup and using the Audi Fox platform was the quickest thing at the time.

Actually, the Rabbit was the Golf but renamed for the US market because they didn't think Americans would understand naming a car Golf. VW thought Americans would relate it to the sport rather than the wind.

Corrado is the Spanish for 'wind current or Jet Stream'. Corrado is derived from the Spanish verb 'Correr', which means to Run or to Sprint.

Bora comes from the cold downslope winds that blow from Hungary and into the Adriatic Sea

The Sirocco is named for the warm desert winds that reach the Mediterranean from Africa.

The Passat is a German term for a trade wind.
Golf is German for gulf wind. So it does not mean a slick vehicle to carry golf clubs.

Passat refers to a wind, its the Trade Wind that crosses the Atlantic Ocean between North Africa and South America. The Golf refers to the Gulf Stream Air Current and the Scirocco, a hot African Desert wind. The Cabriolet was also refered to as Golf Cabriolet. The Jetta and Bora are also named after a winds.

Polo could be the Polar Winds, however I am unsure and it confuses things even more when in 1977, VWAG debued the Derby, which was a Polo with a trunk (the sedan version). Mind you the Polo also got a wagon version called Polo Estate. The Lupo slots below it and even that I have no idea where they got that name. VWAG seems to be gotten equestrian inspired as they also have the Fox which came here from Brazil in 1987-1994 which still exists today in Europe. So if seems that VWAG is not necessarily inspired by winds, even the first and second generation Passats that came here was not called Passat, but Dasher and Quantum. They used Quantum in the US as VWoA thought that customers would associate it with nuclear physica and high technology. There was also a larger plush versions of the Quantum called Santana. I don't think those ever made it over here as the Quantum was by no means inexpensive.

Cabrio is short for cabriolet

Webster's:

Main Entry: cab·ri·o·let
Pronunciation: "ka-brE-&-'lA
Function: noun
Etymology: French, from diminutive of cabriole caper, alteration of Middle French capriole
1 : a light 2-wheeled one-horse carriage with a folding leather hood, a large apron, and upward-curving shafts
2 : a convertible coupe

The Cabrio is just a convertible Rabbit/Golf.
