    Shifter Cable?

So my 99 VW Passat has been out of commision for the last month or so. I was told it needed a new clutch and after having that replaced, it's still not running. They guys I have working on it for me say that it now needs a new shifter cable. Only thing is that I'm having a hard time finding this part. When searching for shifter cable I am getting results for "Shift Lever Linkage" and "gear shifter locking cable" Are these parts the same thing? Or do you know of any place that I can get a Shifter Cable?

There's no shift cable on these cars, but yes there is shift LINKAGE. One is a static piece that bolts onto the side of the transmission, while the other moves the gear selector in and out of the transmission. The gear selector rod is held on by a 10 mm set screw. Adjustment of this one is pretty straightforward. The static rod is held in by an allen screw on the side of the transmission(unsure of size) but can be a little bit more of a pain to put on. Each one has a set of bushings, but don't worry about those, they wear but hardly completely fail (unless the u-joint on the selector rod broke apart somehow.)

What on the car is not running? Does it not start? Does it not shift? Does the slave cylinder work? What occurred that made you replace the clutch?

Details, and I believe you'll be able to find an answer, if not, at least be pointed in the right direction of diagnosing it.

My original post about what was wrong with it. The car itself turns on and runs but it just doesn't accelerate. When they took the clutch disc out, they told me it was literally broken in half and the teeth on the pressure plate were bent aswell. As far as I know, before the clutch was replaced, it still shifted into gear, whether the clutch was engaged or not. I've been told that's the same case and when they re took it apart to look at it, they came to the conclusion that it was the shifter cable that was broken. Now the guy i have working on it said he didn't even think it had one in it, which is why now I am super confused. But as it is extremely difficult for me to find this part at all it makes me think it may be called something else. I'm still waiting on a photo of the broken part which I won't have until later tonight.

If your "guys" are telling you it needs a non-existent part, they: 1. Haven't actually looked at it. 2. Don't know these cars, or 3. Are lying to you - or any combination thereof. Question is, did any of these apply before they charged you for a clutch?

Assuming you're not helping work on it, I think I'd say: "You charged me $XXXX because the car didn't go. It still doesn't go. Isn't that your problem?"

Well they have been working on it free of charge for me, as long as I buy the parts. Just a good friend who is a mechanic and supposedly has someone that works on cars at the VW dealership helping him with it. I had multiple people look at it to tell me it was the clutch in the first place, that's when I bought a new clutch kit. The main concern the last few weeks was getting the battery charged, it had been sitting so long it didn't even start. Once he got it started again and actually diagnosed it he said it was just the clutch that needed to be replaced, and after the clutch was replaced it's still not accelerating and acting the same as it was before.
