1999 1.8 passat wont idle, multiple problems

Hello, I'm new to forums of any kind, but my son told me to try this out.
ive just brought a 1.8 1999 passat - -it was a repossesion and has been standing for a few months.
on the way home it would not idle and cut out every time.
once home i changed the spark plugs and checked the air filter - also checked the exhaust for leaks but that seems ok
now it starts but runs realy lumpy and still cuts out. it's drivin me mad !
i have bought the VW elsawin software but i think it's a waste of money [unless i'm using it wrong]
and just to annoy me ,the sump plug it that tight that ive bent my socket bar trying to loosen it[it badly needs an oil change]
can anyone give me any pointers to start checking ?

first off, this is in the wrong forum, so I am going to move it where it will get the correct attention...

next, please open your User CP and put in the pertinent info - motor, location, et al.

WRT the sump plug you've been trying to loosen - I'll bet 10 pounds to a donut that you've been trying to loosen the transmission drain plug vice the oil drain plug. I'll let other chie in to help you...

but it is the sump plug that wont loosen.
not sure when the last owner ever serviced it !!
my try a bit more brute force , but not too much ! dont want to crack the sump

Really? Did you take the belly pan off to reach it?

the transmission drain plug has been mistaken as the oil drain plug by MANY, many people here - and they put the plug back in, and then added oil, overfilling the motor. that's absolutely not good, as I am sure you know... the tranny drain plug is not only tightened well in place, but also has locktite on the threads - hence, it is tough to remove. hence, my "wager" in my previous post when I moved the thread.

in order to remove the oil drain plug, as scott alluded to above, you'd have to remove the belly pan (if the car still has one).

Your idle problem could be vacuum line leaks or leaking detiorated one way check valves. There is one check valve next to you ignition control module and two under the intake manifold.

If the battery went dead, then the problem could also be throttle body adaptation. You will need a vag com for that.
