    2005 TDI transmission/torque converter?? problem

Have 2005 TDI with 276,000 miles. Used trans put in about 50K ago, not sure mileage of that or torque converter. Transmission light this summer on and off several times. On the road 50K a year and had checked out at independent shop, they were not sure but thought a solenoid. 600 miles home and noticed running 600-700 higher RPM. Took to local VW specialist and came up with these codes:
17125- Torque Converter Clutch: Stuck OFF/ No power being transferred
    P0741-003 Mechanical Failure- MIL ON
Shop admits they are not trans experts and will replace the torque converter if I want, but said had similar car before and torque change didn't help. The only thing is now that colder weather is here RPM are running where the used to be till the day gets hot. On the highway the RPM at 75MPH are at 2700-2900, when used to be 2300-2400. Once since this happened went into safe mode while on a mountain. Just not sure if torque converter or trans. Maybe should go to dealer and get over mistrust(even though I know they have more advanced training). Just last three days a noise has started, not sure if related. Sounds like a belt, but speed of sound does not increase with RPM's. Between a belt and metallic light rubbing sound. ???? Refuse to give up car because this wagon is perfect and the most comfortable sporty car I've had for long mileage trips.

TDI torque converters have been known to fail.

You have very high miles. Are you still on the original oil pump? If not, it's possible it's finally given out. If that is the case, don't drive the car because it's getting low oil pressure. It sounds like a bad bearing in an electric motor.

It could also be the AC clutch pulley, alternator pulley, or something related to the wheels/axle.

Here is more on that issue: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b...passat-tdi.htm

Here is a general maintenance checklist for your car if you weren't aware of any other issues: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/b...ying-guide.htm

If you find that you will need another new transmission, have you considered a 5 or 6 speed swap? The member "Scott_Dewitt" over at tdiclub.com can order these in.

You have a ton of miles on that car. Are you still on the chain drive balance shaft module?

I think that there is a company somewhere that builds more stout torque converters for these transmissions. Check into that too.

miles on the odometer mean nothing when talking about diesels. 1/4 million is still good as new

and the company i believe you're thinking of is IPT.

It sounds like the seal on the TC lock went out. Common issue on all VW/Audi. I had the same problem and ended up replacing the TC.
