Passat 1.8T 2002 Timing belt Replacement

    Hello everybody.

I am a owner of Passat GLS 1.8T 2002 of 71,000 Miles. I do have replace the Timing belt at this stage and would be grateful if someone could show or guide me how to because I have to do it by myself. If possible with pics because I don't really speak English well.

    Thank you in advance.

HERE is a start. However, I strongly recommend purchasing a shop manual for your car before beginning; in the USA the standard one is published by Bentley. This is not something you want to make a mistake on.

Passat 1.8T 2002 Timing belt Replacement

Thanks a lot scotts13 for your help. Just one remark : the write up in the link you gave is related to B5.1.8T. Could someone pls confirm whether it is exactly the same TB replacement procedure between B5 and B5.5.

    Thank you very much.

here is taligentx's writeup for his b5.5, the waterpump setup is different.

(from Information-Forum Index (Before you search, look here!))

do yourself a favor and replace the water pump with a metal impeller pump. this will save you from having to redo the belt when the pump fails.

ECS tuning sells complete kits for much less than the dealer. match up the kit with your engine code.

you want to have a paper bentley manual before you start. inexpensive bentley manual:

you'll also need a "pin wrench", like this:

I numbered the screws and parts I took off and put them in baggies that I labeled as not to lose any. I did a job in Maryland once that we got all the way to the end of the project and couldn't find the belly pan screws. It wasn't a major loss.

The B5.5 is similar enough to figure it out. Slight differences on the front end bolts, but the writeup in the Info Forum does show the AWM/AUG timing belt at the bottom with the differences. The AWM/AUG is slightly easier to change than the AEB/ATW.
