How do I know if My Passat is a B5?

I recently purchased a 4 Dr sedan 2000 Passat in the USA with the 1.8 L Turbo and a 5-speed trans. I really like the car but there seems to be a lot of confusing information about them. I have figured some out but still have questions. Do I have a B5 or something else? What do the two icons near the MPG rating mean? One is a "O" with a "/" through it. Another looks like the number "1". How do I know what kind of coolant is in it and what should I replace the old coolant with? I guess that is enough for now. Thanks.

    You have a B5. Model Year 1996-2001.5 where B5, 2001.5-2005 were "B5.5"

    Volkswagen Passat B5 (Typ 3B, 1996-2001)
    Volkswagen Passat B5.5 (Typ 3BG, 2001-2005)

You should be using G12 or G12+ Coolant. (Purple/Pink stuff). If any other color is in the car, it should be thoroughly flushed out and replaced with G12. Not many parts stores have it... you typically have to buy from a dealer or order online.

As far as the "icons", I'm not sure what you're referring to - sorry! Maybe someone else can chime in.

easy way to tell B5 is sexy and stylish, B5.5 has a bloated front end and gaudy chrome on it.

and 2000 in the US is a B5, as far as coolant you can use G12++ as well.

Also... how many miles on the car? Make sure the timing belt has been replaced within ~75k miles, or you will need to do that... and with the 1.8T, make sure you are using a VW 502.00 approved oil, newer "oversized oil filter", and changing your oil religiously within the 5,000 mile change interval. Look up "sludge" on this site for reasons why.

High maintenance cars, but a blast to drive .

Sorry, my bad 1996 was when the B5 launched in Europe, 1998 in North America.

Correcto, I was answering for the Oregonian audience there. I think the Audi A4 in the US was already on the B5 platform, but the Passat didn't come here for 2 more years, as mentioned.

    I believe those first couple years (V6) had a 12v single-cam engine instead of a 30v.

    yes they did, 2.8 12v motor in the 96 A4, they got the 1.8t in addition to the 2.8 12v in 97 in the A4 and a 2.8 30v in the 98 A4.

as far as the icons go, the "O" with the"/" through it is your instant mpg... the other one is your mpg average
