CEL + P0171 System Too Lean, Bank 1 = ?

I did a search and i checked all the hoses everything seems to check out ok, so it looks like it might be my MAF or my O2 sensor. anyone have any idea how much it would cost to check out and repair. Also there is German Performance 951.687.1907 about 3 miles from my location has anyone delt with them? do they have a gor rep?

that's the exact same code i was getting. they ended up replacing my MAF under the extended warranty for the MAF (115,000km)

i had a few hundred miles left when mine went out...

my friend drives an audi a4 and he said there's a way to clean the MAF + coat it with some special electrical silicone... and that's supposed to solve the MAF problem. If you search the forum for "MAF cleaning" you should find something... I know that's where I found about the extended MAF warranty.

Make sure you don't have a vacuum leak before you spend $$$ on a MAF or O2 sensor. Use a vac tester ($15) to check everything.

P0171 is a fairly generic error code (no add/mult trim info). How did you read the error code? Vag-com? Autozone, etc.?

Engine Code? (AEB/ATW/AUG/AWM/AHA/ATQ)

If you have vag-com access, check block 032 and post your fuel trims.

At my company we have mechanics and one of them scanned it for me, i dont have access to vag com. but i will ask them if they have the means of doing a vac test. as far as engine code its a AUG 2001 1.8t tip

I have not heard P0171 being an Ox sensor. It is usually an air metering problem, either caused by a bad mass sensor or an air leak. Leaks can be in the vacuum tubes, intake plumbing, or intercooler. Check these first. Do not expect success cleaning an MAF. Remanufactured unit is probaly $75 to $150, and easy to replace.

Hi,
I have 1.8L 2005 VW passat. I got the engine sign. I checked with auto zone. They said the engine fault code P0171.

Definition : System too lean - bank1.

Explanation :

Low Fuel pressure or volume.

Probable cause :
1. Faulty HO2S (Heated oxygen sensor)
2. Large vacuum leak
3. Faulty MAF sensor.

Please advice what to do ??

try cleaning the MAF first

The correct explaination is unmetered air getting to the combustion chambers. Causes a lean condition in teh air fuel ratio. The car's computer compensates by using more fuel.

How does unmetered air enter the intake?
- The MAF is not working correctly. Clean and/or replace
- A leaky vacuum hose. Find and fix.
- A hole in the air plumbing between MAF and intake manifold. Fix.

like jay said just grab a bottle of maf cleaner and clean it good then have someone clear the code and see if it comes back. is the car going into limp mode, retarded timing and boost?

sry to still the thread, but im getting the same code p0171, but before this code i had a p0420, which was a cat or o2sensor, can it be my o2sensor is causing a different code??
