Check Engine light comes on after engine heats up, why?

I've got a 98 passat 1.8t, and it has an intermittant check engine light

When the engine is cold, probably before the thermostat opens, it is fine, no CEL. When the car is at operating temperature for any amount of time, the CEL comes on. The engine still seems to run fine, temp gauge is right at 90 where it should be.

When the car cools overnight, it is fine with no CEL.

A few days before this started, I thought the water was low so I added a bit of distilled water to the coolant resevoir. I perhaps added too much water, I drained a bit and right now it is between the min and max level indicators, when the engine is both hot, and cold.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going on here? I don't have access to a vag-com at this moment, but if it's undiagnosable, I'll get it checked

It's the Engine coolant temp sender.

It's a $6 Fix, if you do it yourself.
