    Per popular request here is the last and final and stuck for good thread to post images of your installation. In order to post pictures in this thread you must post complete and detailed information listed below.

    The purpose of this thread is for the Noobs and those not so noobish people who are looking to venture out of the box with the Audio needs. This post is strictly for Passat related installations. If you have any other style of installation please see the other sticky post. any non passat related installations will be moved or deleted.

    Posting on this thread jsut to secure position will only be permitted for 48 hours. after 48 hours the post will be deleted! This thread is for people to post useful information. Not a persons intentions to hopefully post information soon.

    Car: 2005 VW Passat GL



    Stock HU: Premium VI, non-Monsoon

    Stock speakers: None of the existing speakers have been changed

    Amplifier: Sony Xplod (will edit with part number)

    Subwoofer: Sony Xplod 10" (will edit with part number)

    Wiring: Purchased 4awg subwoofer wiring kit at my local Sony outlet, approx $50. I also purchased an LOC (line output converter).

    Custom work: Member StLB5, Josh Behrens, fabbed a custom-fit fiberglass enclosure tuned for the needs of this specific woofer.

    Product locations: The amp is located behind the cubby door on the driver's side of my trunk compartment. I have completely removed the shelving unit in there and relocated the CD changer to the outside of the cubby door. The subwoofer is nestled in the cubby on the passenger's side of the trunk. The cubby door has been removed to make way for the unit.

    Installation: Using this site as a reference, I ran all the wiring myself, removed the HU, connected the LOC and all associated work. Josh built the enclosure and dropped in the sub. Not counting fiberglassing, installation took an afternoon. This was my first time tearing into my Passat at all, so I took it a bit slowly. A second time around would go much, much more quickly.

    Custom kicks were made to hold the system 340 mid and tweeter, the midbass went in the OEM door location. System 240 went into the OEM rear door locations. HU went in OEM location. Amps, subs and batteries all went into custom fabricated pieces in the hatch. TheBatCap 800s under the hood went into the OEM location but custom fabricated bus bars were needed.

    Who installed it (if you didnt do it, dont take credit for it, give credit where credit is due): Fred and I did the install.

    How long did it take to install it: Approximately 6 days for fabrication and about a week at the painter and about 6 hours to get it in and wired.

    If you had to do it again what would you do differently: Everything, I'm never happy. Specifically, smaller kicks or horns possibly, amps in the headliner, use a LOT less, and possibly no, painted parts.

    What advice do you have for any noobs who would want to do a system like this: Don't go help Fred with another car and mention you want a "small system."

    Well duh! I have some ideas for the new one. One thing I'm adamant about in the rebuild, well two really. 1) No inverted subs and 2) we actually build the cover so I can put shit back there!

    All right guys - before I post, just wanted to say that I am a complete n00b to audio set ups, and this was my first attempt at anything like this. My cautious nature won out - and I went with inexpensive components, so that if I totally &^%* up, the damage to my wallet would be minimal.

    I am on the complete opposite end of the spectrum on systems - from the other amazing set ups in this post - defenitely bargain basement. Funny thing is - the install is less than 12 hours old, and I think it's already time for an upgrade.


    Year of Passat - 1999 GLS

    What kind of stereo came stock with the car - single din

    any custom fabrication work to install stereo - not at this time, currently have sub installed in as Scosche SE10KT pre-fab box.

    head unit - include model number and manufacture - stock unit

    Speakers - stock speakers

    Amplifiers - Bazooka CSA 150.1

    Processors - none

    Subwoofers - Scosche SW1004

    Video - none

    Wiring - 8 gauge

    Battery(s) - stock

    Locations of product installed and what did you have to do to put it there - the amp is attached under the rear shelf, drilled and set in place

    Who installed it (if you didnt do it, dont take credit for it, give credit where credit is due) install was all me !!

    How long did it take to install it - total about 4 hours

    If you had to do it again what would you do differently - buy the right gauge wire. I pulled the package from the area that said 4 gauge, but did not read the label - just walked away.

    What advice do you have for any noobs who would want to do a system like this

    Similar to measure twice, and cut once - do not be in a rush to have everything set in its final setting until you are sure everything works. I ran all the wires, cleaned up the inside of the car, but left the trunk in shambles until I was sure all the wiring was correct - and all the items worked.

    Two things that were critical to my success

    1. As mentioned on this board - take the time to ensure your grounding area is good and clean of any paint, etc. And use a star washer to hold everthing in place

    2. Remove the fuse from the power wire until you are sure all your connections are good - to ensure you don't blow anything up.







    I still want to clean up the wiring in the trunk some more - but everything works, after a couple of hours of working on the settings, etc - am overall happy with my first attempt at this, the process - and the end result.

    Thanks to everyone who helped guide me along - info was spot on !!!

    Factory cassette head unit

    What kind of stereo came stock with the car - factory cassette head unit

    any custom fabrication work to install stereo - yes. First of all, it has not had as much work as I would like (I have two young kids), and although I wish I had their skill, I'm no "Fred" nor "Paul"! but in the end the sound quality is something I'm proud of. Sometimes I think that my system is so un-slick it resembles some of what is in the "oops" thread, but it is solid, without no duck tape, all connections are soldered, taped and heat-shrunk, and for the most part, tucked away neatly.

    (I have pics somewhere of the sound dampening going in. Paul's pics of his doors are about exactly the same as my results, though I used more tacmat and different deflex product.)

    -3 layers cascade V-max on entire roof, liftgate, 1/4 panels, and front doors (body metal, inner metal, and some on door card)
    -on Fred's recommendation (years ago!) front doors also got the 1/4" pink acoustic insulation called "tacmat" on the entire inner surface of the outer body metal, and cascade deflex pads immediately behind the woofers. Result was a huge improvement in mid-range sound quality. It convinced me not to bother with relocating the mids (to, say, custom kick-panels).
    -V-block on spare wheel-well and cargo area, as well as a good portion under the back seats. I would like to extend to cover under front seats but haven't got there yet.

    -rudimentary tweeter housings in A pillars for 2" tweets
    -rudimentary fibreglass build-out for driver's door woofer, not too obscene looking, but not show-worthy; a more modest build-out inside psgr door but door card covers it. Purpose of both is to bring the woofers slightly more on-axis, biased toward the driver.





    head unit - VW factory cassette/radio, which (through PIE adapters) controls a Panasonic DVD changer and Kenwood Sirius satellite radio tuner.



    (the above pic may look frightening, but in fact it is under control and perfectly sound. There are two peripheral adapters and an 11-pin relay working together. Also, I have a number of connectors that may seem redundant but actually allow the quick introduction of new "experimental" pieces to the system, as well as trouble-shooting components as needed. Lastly, the coiled rca's are not in use, they are just tied out of the way, as you may be able to tell by the white caps on them. By nature of the fact that this cubby area is normally covered, give me a break on its appearance!)

    The DVD changer goes straight digital fibre optic into an Alpine PXA-H701. The Sirius tuner goes straight analog rca into same, as does the AM/FM output (taken at speaker-level output at the factory radio and converted to rca). The RUX C701 controller (volume, input select, as well as crossovers/parametric eq/time-alignment) sits hidden in my console for now, I plan to mount it in the sunroof cover overhead, eventually. In the meantime, the factory radio is the only visible control unit.

    Speakers - dynaudio 2" tweeters (from system 220 ages ago), focal 5W4252 midrange, no rears at the moment, although the PXA-H701 is capable of rear channel output

    Amplifiers - McIntosh MC431 4x100W for mids/tweets, zapco 3.0x bridged mono for sub

    Processors - PXA-H701 only

    Subwoofers - brahma 10" sub in 1 ft3 sealed

    Wiring - 4 awg power and ground, fuse/dist blocks for both power and ground, basic 16 awg primary wire for front stage, 12 awg for sub, basic twisted pair rcas in very short runs

    Battery(s) - only one, Motomaster 6-year deal. Phoenix Tantrum 10-farad cap (ultra-low ESR, actually a bank of a zillion little capacitors) coming soon, although I wouldn't say my system is terribly current-hungry, but it may tighten-up the bass a bit

    Locations of product installed and what did you have to do to put it there - I removed the carpet cover/flap from the cargo area. I cut a piece of mdf narrow enough to cover the area behind the back seats but still allow the spare tire cover to open, painted it black, and screwed it down and everything else down to it. The sub box is braced onto the floor too, but removable to access the spare as needed.



    I went for the double-din mod and put the obligatory McIntosh meters in place above the factory head unit. I get a giggle out of the 70's style VU meters kickin to the beats.



    I ran the satellite antenna wire through the top of the rubber hose/grommet that houses wires going into the liftgate at the top.





    Who installed it (if you didnt do it, dont take credit for it, give credit where credit is due) - I did, and though it isn't much for show, it sounds great, and is safe and sound (properly fused, mounted, terminated, etc.).

    How long did it take to install it - surprising as it may sound, a lot of my spare time over the course of about two summers. There were various hardware swaps though (long list!).

    If you had to do it again what would you do differently - I plan to do it again and again so my answer to this will change over time. I definitely would like to build the sub into the side of the cargo area, while still achieving the existing 1 ft3 net volume. I plan to re-do the amplifier area, with the result being both better looks and more protection for the amps (or the amps that will be replacing these). I look forward to a second battery in the back, the 10-farad cap, an ICB and isolator beside the front battery, mini LCD screen hidden in rear-view mirror (for nav), rear speakers, added sound barrier in the floor, maybe even bass-shakers underneath the seats (not full time, just switchable for the f of it, really just want to see what it might be like to excite the 20-30Hz region through seat vibration, rather than with potentially harmful SPL). Given enough time, even the existing features would be a lot sexier-looking. Though I am pleased with the front stage sound quality.

    What advice do you have for any noobs who would want to do a system like this - be in close contact with people who know what they are doing. Also be mindful that what you install is removable, for a number of reasons. In any case, most anyone could have accomplished the install I did, once the desired components were obtained.

    New Receiver Installed -- Pioneer AVH-PDVD4100 w/ iPod Adapter

    Speakers – Replaced with Pioneer TS-A643P

    Wiring – Aftermarket Wiring harness soldered and taped to Pioneer Harness

    Installed DVD Receiver with a custom mount and trim ring. I have installed a few single din CD receivers in the past with a Metra dash kit, but there is not a double din dash kit for the 01 Passat. Since I didn’t want to spend hours learning how to install this DVD receiver I had someone from www.decibelsmobileinstalls.com install this setup for me. Overall it only took about 2 hours for him to install. The next step now is to get some LCD headrests for back seat viewing.

    About a month ago I finished my sub install as well. I’ve had the system for about 4 years and this is the second vehicle it’s been installed in.

    Legacy 2000 watt Amp (1000wX2ch bridged or 500wX4ch)
    Visonik 12” 1000w Sub
    Q-Logic Sealed Box (right side port can be uncovered to create ported box)
    1 farad Audio Pipe capacitor

    Previously I had installed the Amp in a fixed position, but I wanted the freedom this time to use my trunk for other things as well. My amp is a few inches longer than my sub box, which meant I couldn’t just screw it to the back, and my capacitor and distribution blocks all needed to be wired in, so I built a box to hold all those odds and ends. For ventilation I put in a couple 2” fans to move air in and out the back, and hooked them up via a relay (turned on by the remote wire) from the main power wire. Now all I have to do is disconnect the main power wire and ground wire from the distribution blocks(preamps and speaker wire from amp as well), and the whole system comes right out. Only problem is I have to adjust the amp settings blind because the box doesn’t let me really see the side of the amp where the controls are.

    anyone know any tips for routing a the break wire from my dvd player to a switch on the dash? i especially would like to know a good grounding spot near the front of the car.

    Head Unit - Sony Xplod CDX-GT820ip

    Speakers - Stock Monsoon

    Amplifiers - Stock Monsoon, Kicker zr600

    Processors - none

    Subwoofers - 12" Kicker SoloBaric L5

    Video - none

    Wiring - 4g power and ground to cap and amp w/ 80A glass fuse, RadioShack RCA cables to sub amp and Sony accessories, Monster Cable Sony data bus cable.

    Battery(s) - OEM

    Locations of product installed and what did you have to do to put it there:
    • Sony HU replaced Monsoon HU
      • Installed Sony cage
      • Soldered and shrink-wrapped Sony harness to converter harness
      • Wired in aftermarket antenna amplifier circuit
      • Wired in PAC-SWI PS steering wheel control adapter
        • Removed glove box
        • Stuck PAC-SWI to side of console cage between the console and glovebox
        • Ran wires inside console cage to stereo area
      • Ran two pairs of RCA, one data line, and amp remote-on wire to cargo area.
    • Sony SIR-SNY1 Sirius tuner installed in OEM CD Changer shelf
      • Removed defunct OEM changer
      • Ran data cable and Aux-In RCA to "Utility Closet" and up to tuner
      • Installed satellite receiver and carefully ran wire to Sirius tuner under rubber weather seal for the hatch
    • Sony 10 Disc Changer installed in cargo area w/ Velcro for easy removal
      • Ran RCA and data cable from Sirius tuner to 10 Disc Changer
      • Stuck Changer in front of "Utility Closet"
    • Tsunami 1.2f Capacitor on left wall of cargo area
      • Ran fused 4g power line from batter, through cab, to rear left side of cargo area
      • Ran ground to inside of cargo area
    • Kicker zr600 on right wall of cargo area
      • Ran 4g power and ground from cap, across back of cargo area, to amp
      • Ran RCA sbwoofer channel and remote power to amp
    • Kicker 12" SoloBaric L5 in ported box sitting in left corner of cargo area
      • Unmounted for easy removal, does not shift unless driving like an idiot
      • Wires ran from sub, under cargo area mat, to amp

    Who installed it (if you didnt do it, dont take credit for it, give credit where credit is due)? - Me

    How long did it take to install it? - I didn't keep track, over 10 hours taking my time

    If you had to do it again what would you do differently? - buy more amp power line so I could have made it more discreet and find someone who can help me make a hidden, or at least a smaller, more practical sub enclosure.

    What advice do you have for any noobs who would want to do a system like this? - Obviously, I didn't do a crazy upgrade. I just wanted a more capable modern system with a bit of bass for my different tastes of tunes. I find the OEM Monsoon amp and drivers to be sufficient for my needs, I just wanted to supplement and improve what was already there. My advice is to research your stuff, don't just buy something because it looks cool. You probably won't be happy in the end.

    Amp located in right rear compartment. Removed first aid holder for more room.

    why did you make this ------------ i like a good sound but my wife dont like to see the trunk full o cables and big boxes with the subwoofers .empty and clean

    Amp power cable help!

    I have a 2005 Passat and I've got a pretty good idea how to install the amp and everything, the only problem I'm having is that I cant find a way to get the power cable through the firewall and into the car. I saw in one of the pictures that the power cable ran into a black box on the right side of the engine compartment, that seems like the best way but they don't show where it goes once inside that box, or how to get the cover off (the last bolt is hidden in the back underneath the body). If anyone could help me get the cable through with some step by step instructions that would help me a lot! (pictures are really good too)

    You need a short socket but it WILL come off. Then the cable drops down where all the other cabels come into the car. It'll be VERY obvious when you look under the dash.
