G 002 000 (pwr steering fluid) - mineral or synthetic?!

On the reservoir is written "only mineral oil" and "G 002 000".

Just bought from VW dealer original VW/Audi "Oil for hydraulic systems and power assisted steering", same number on container as on the reservoir: G 002 000 but synthetic, not mineral.

Is it ok to complete using this synthetic oil?

    Car is a 99 V6.

    Thanks

Re: G 002 000 (pwr steering fluid) - mineral or synthetic?! (MNC)

It’s like synthetic motor oil. There is “true” synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 SuperSyn with synthetic polyalphaolefin (PAO) base stock, and all other synthetic oils such as Castrol Syntec and Valvoline SynPower with hydroisomerized petroleum base stock. I believe as long as it says "G 002 000" and it is from your VW dealer, it should be perfect for your Passat.

I still remember people used to put PS fluid, bought from auto retail stores, in Audis/VWs PS reservoir and caused all kind of leak problems on their rack.

Some more infor from the container label:

"Pentosin Fluid CHF 11S * Product Code No. 1405108"

"Synthetic oil for central hydraulic systems, level control, hydro-pneumatic suspensions, shock absorbers & power steering"

    also that:

"do not mix with other hydraulic oils"

Ok to mix with the mineral oil in the car? Is it this Synthetic Pentosin CHF 11S the same oil that is referred as mineral on the power steering oil reservoir on car?

    Anynody knowing this, please?

    Thanks, yrwei52.

Does the same "mineral only" requirement appear on newer Passat's? (mine is 99)

Still trying to figure out if it is the same fluid that's in the car or not. Of course I've completed it before to ask.. Want now just to know if I did a wrong thing or not.

    So, is in this case synthetic G 002 000 == mineral G 002 000?!?

I guess the PS fluid you bought from VW dealer is “G 002 000 synthetic based mineral PS fluid”. I actually talked to my VW parts friend and he told me there is only one PS fluid available for VW. It is 1-liter plastic bottle for $23 and I believe it is what you have. It should be safe to use on your Passat.

Yup, same here, from the VW parts department I was told the same thing, that is one single type of PS fluid VW has for all its cars, is a "synthetic mineral" oil and it shall be exactly what I have (had) on the car, not close but the exactly same.

    1 liter plastic bottle, 30 CAD ~ 20 US$

    Thanks again!
