Yup, I have. I took it apart by unscrewing all the little screws around the edges on the inside and super glued the 2 long pins in place. Part of the plastic that holds the pins was broken and the handle was not working. I have not had a problems since.
Yup, me too. Dealer replaced it at 22k miles.
yep happened here as well. you should have seen the gizmo I made to hold it shutI could not settle for tape, I had to make a retaining system out of paperclips and rubber bands
Hmmmm. My latch broke after I closed it, two days ago.Can someone post a picture of the latch mechanism when it's open so I can try to pick the lock or if anyone has had my experience, share how they dealt with it?
this happened to me too a coupl eof days ago..can the dealer fix under warranty?
Yes, if you are still under warranty they will fix it. At least they did fix it for someone I work with. Unfortunately, I'm out of warranty.

It seems a number of us have had the broken glove box experience, so it's likely that some more of us will. I wanted to post some help for future "glove boxers." Everyone who posted on this thread had their door fail open, mine failed closed. I used a coat hanger snaked into the box and looped around the dead bolt, which is beveled on the engine side, to pop open the door.

As you can see by the photo, there are two individual cams that operate, when the door lever is pulled. The lever pushes down on the cams. Each cam pulls the dead bolt back on each side of the box. The cams pivot on plastic posts that are flared on the ends to keep the cams in place. In the case of my box failure the flared plastic piece had broken and a cam had fallen off its pivot post. Referring to the picture again, you can see that I have installed screws onto the ends of the cam posts to ensure that the cams cannot fall off again. It's all pretty simple once you know how the mechanism works.
Well, I got back from the dealer with the glove box door replaced under warranty. I did have to remind them that the 2002 have a 48,000mile warranty, NOT a 24,000 mile warranty though.
Oy, this just happened to me. I'm just put some air into my tires, and was when I opened the glove box to replace my pressure gauge, it wouldn't close. I have a service appointment in under two weeks, so I guess I'll just tape it closed until then. I'm almos at the 1 year mark (two shy) and 21K miles.
You can add my 2001.5 wagon to the list of passats with a broken glove box. It happened last week. So I had the dealership give me an estimate today when I took my car in for the two recalls that came out this June & July. I was thinking $100 bucks or so (I'm not under warranty), and was going to give them grief about that. I couldn't believe it when they came back with an estimate of $314!!!!!!!!!!. $150 for the part and the rest for labor. This is the same dealership, Ourisman of Laurel, MD. that wanted $66 to replace the right headlight. Anyway, thanks for your creative suggestions on how to DIY. Hopefully I can have it working this evening and can put away the calking gun I've been using.
My glove box is hard to close, you basically have to slam it. The pins are lined up correctly and push in easily with a finger, but it's still just hard to get it shut. I guess I'll soon have to take it into the dealer.
Some times I think about buying the car out at the end of the lease since I did some mods and chipped it. I really love the car, but I hate these little problems that end up costing you money and time.
Here is what I ended up doing to fix the glove box door. Rather than messing with strings, wires, latches and other gizmos, I went with Velcro (12" from auto store $3). I like this because it preserves the pull-down functionality of the glove box. It was also simple, fast, and ended up not looking half bad. It required superglue for fastening since the adhesive that comes attached to the velcro slips off at high temperatures. I put the full strip (soft side) across the inside top edge of the glove box door. The rough side went underneath the top of the glove box compartment where it would meet upon closure. I found that I had to use three 2"-3" pieces on top because the velcro was too strong (the door too hard to open) when all 12" met all 12", if that makes any sense. Anyway, there is plenty of strength, it looks good, and functions normally. The only thing I'm out now is the lock, but I can live without that. I have pictures but nowhere to put them on the web, which I guess is necessary to get them in this post. I can email in case you are interested.

Mine is a 2001.5 and happened right after I bought it. Dealer replaced the lock under warranty. Never had this happen to any car I've ever owned. Now it's in the shop for the rear trunk lock.
Mine broke at 23800 miles...got it replaced under the 24000 mile warranty...phew
Yeap I had the same problem in the closed position. First time they tried to fixed it the glove box door did not line up-I could see inside the glove box by the gap they left when it was closed. Eventually the dealer replaced the glove box door under warranty. Now I am out of warranty so I close the glove box very carefully.
These are NOT your typical American made glove boxes. They do not have the latch in the center of the door, but have pins that slide into slots on either end of the door. The door is also on a geared tram and slamming the glove box shut (like I used to do with all glove box doors) is a bad thing. :roll:
One can view and access part of the glove box works by pulling off the side panel at the end of the dash. It's the same kind of panel that covers the fuses, but on the other end. :shock:

My glove box lock broke under warranty and was repaired free of charge. Tonight it broke again! What junk!
my glove box broke too. now i dont have ahndle on it and i have to press down a latch with my finger to get it open. oh and the right latch never worked well. it would always get stuck.

I repaired my glove box with two short, fine-thread screws, two thin washers and Krazy brand glue. I used a box cutter, flat head and hex head (i think that's the one) screw drivers, and two clamps. Here's how:
1. Remove the seven hex head screws and remove glove box
2. Pry the door face from the door with the box cutter then slide the flat head screw driver along the door edge to crack the seam
3. Reseat mechanism and spring and insert a screw with washer in each of two pegs - test latch
4. Apply Krazy glue to the door
5. Apply Krazy glue to the door face, too - one side not strong enough
6. Clamp glove box closed for a couple hours
7. Replace in car and rejoice!
The velcro was my thought exactly! I'm having the same issues with my 2000 Passat glove bo. Thanks for all the helpful tips
Hello, my glove box failed closed as yours did. I tried to look at your picture, the link does not open it. Can you send the picture? Did you use the coat hanger on each side of the door to pop the door open? I have 2003 Passast, it seems to have a latch on left and right side of the door.
