B5.5 AWM Oil Cooler from AutoZone okay?

So my oil cooler is allowing oil into my coolant. At least that's my explanation for oil in my coolant during a water pump replacement last weekend.

I don't know how much these are from the dealer. AutoZone seems to be about $95.

Has anyone experienced any reliability issues with the AutoZone oil cooler?

Side note, I'll be doing this at my next oil change probably from below.. geeze, that's going to be a messy job I think.

Check the on-line vendors too. Call the dealer and ask for pricing and part number. I don't know which brand AutoZone sells. I don't know which brands are better or worse then the others. I got a replacement from ECS I think. I forget which brand.

If you'd like I can try and find the receipt from when mine went out, don't remember what brand they installed. ~75k miles ago and still going strong. That was before I found PW, paid an indy.

Probably been 5 years, I make no guarantee on being able to locate.

Thanks for doing the leg work for me.

The Dorman is at Rock Auto for $42 total of $53 shipped with gasket from USPS priority. They don't list anything other than Dorman for OE style replacements.

Thanks for the offer, but I agree it's probably not very useful to me now.

That's good, I'd rather not relive it if they hosed me!

Personally I'd go for the Behr.

    1) The oil cooler is definitely something you want to buy OE, not OEM. A lot of people have had these things fail, and it can cause some serious engine damage. Spend the extra money.
    2) Get the 2.8 oil cooler, it's larger and will warm the oil more quickly on cold mornings, as well as cool the oil better on hot days. Here's the part numbers:

    028-117-021-E (2.8 oil cooler)
    028-115-721-B (longer union pipe)

Do you happen to know the price of the 2.8 cooler?

Where does the union pipe go?

Any write-ups for the 2.8 cooler install on a 1.8?

The stock cooler lasted me 152k miles. I'm happy with that. I would prefer to not spend $200+ at the dealer for a replacement though especially seeing as the one at the dealer is quite possibly no better than the local parts store as the 1.8 was phased out a while ago.

I paid about $130 from Auburn about 8 years ago. The union pipe is another $10 or so. The union pipe looks like an iron nipple you get at HD, it's about 3/4" in diameter and threaded at both ends. One end threads into the engine, then you slide the oil cooler into it, and a thin nut holds that on. The oil filter then screws into the remaining threaded portion. Since the 2.8 oil cooler is longer than the 1.8, you need the longer union pipe. I'm sure there's a DIY somewhere if you search. Here's VAGlinks to help you with the part search:

I'm not going to bother with the upgrade, but thanks for the suggestion.

As far as DIYs for the 1.8, I had searched and there were lots of poor pictures with comments about how difficult it is to get at. That wasn't very helpful. I'll have to take my inspection camera to see if I can get a better idea of what I'm dealing with before I actually do it.

I did not see anywhere that there was a hard pipe from the engine to the oil cooler. I thought both coolant lines were rubber and then I thought both in/out oil passages came straight from the engine (that's how it is on other cars I have dealt with factory oil coolers on anyway).

Here is a cooler with the hard pipe ( union), the union goes thru the center.

It's been too long since I installed the v6 on my 1.8, but it was one of the easiest jobs I've done on the car. The center pipe threads into the engine, through the center of the cooler. It's what the filter spins onto. Once the cooler is out, the pipe is left on the engine and you just spin it out. I don't recall what holds the cooler itself on though. If i had to guess, probably a nut on the end of the pipe, where the filter attaches.

The worst part of the job is pulling the hoses and cleanup. Most of the job is done blind given its location, but not too bad. Fresh hoses might not be a bad idea too. Sorry for the lack of detail... it's been a while.

Can anybody chime in on just how much the 2.8 cooler would mitigate sludge on a 1.8T, if at all? I imagine that's the appeal? It's about the only reason I'd consider upgrading.

If dropping the pan wasn't such a PITA on 1.8T I'd concur it's not worth the hassle, but anything straightforward you can do as PM from blocking the pick-up tube's screen is worthwhile imo.

Sludge does not appear to be a problem if you use synthetic oil.

Plus you should always be mindful of turning a turbo vehicle off right after a long highway drive (even when pulling off at a rest area) or after romping it down some roads or up a big hill.
