    2001 Door questions

OK, I searched, but there is such a vast amount of information on here, and I don't have time to sift through all of it.

I recently bought a 2001 Passat for my daughter, and have a few minor issues.

The driver's door will not unlock when you open it from the inside. It will unlock if you push the unlock button on the door. The little knob by the window is missing. I took the inner door panel off, but could not find it in there either. I did loosen the metal inner panel also, and could not see much. Any suggestions to solve this minor issue?

The other one is that the interior lights will not turn off when all the doors are closed. Yes, I am aware of the three way switch on them. Is it possible or even likely that the door lock and the interior light problems are related, as I have read that the light swith is in the latch assembly of the door?

I have an '01 B5. I think I have to pull the latch twice on the driver's door to get it open. It seems like the first pull with unlock it, and the second will open it.

Having the little nub/cover that pokes thru the hole (where the visible lock/unlock indicator is), gone missing isn't a big deal in my eyes. As long as the door can actually lock and unlock, that's what counts. So unless the metal rod that the nub/cover sits on, is scraping anything, or being impeded in any way, I don't see a problem - it's an aesthetic thing.

As far as the interior lights go ... I can only guess that it's some kind of sensor or circuit that's not detecting that all the doors are closed. I don't think the door lock and interior light issue are related, but don't quote me on that

*I just got my B5 too, and when I run into something that's a little weird, I have to remember "There is a reason while the previous owner is sold it." And the list.

Sounds like a faulty door lock module or microswitch somewhere. just search and a bunch come up here. heres one w/ some good info and repair procedure if you are inclined.
Door lock module problem fixed for GBP £2
May even be broken wire in the "boots" in the door jamb as these break from use too.

    Good luck, Tim

Virtually everything you'd want to know about the door lock module is at:

No, not with the symptoms the OP described. Virtually every signal crosses the door hinge (boot) on Canbus (a network on a pair of wires). Besides Canbus, only power, ground, gas lid release, and audio cross the hinge.

Pull the pass side door panel off. Is the same set-up. See what is missing on driver side. You may need a new door latch and that will fix your dome light problem also! You can take the door latch off dissassembly and check the microswitch if you have time! Not a fun job! A little challenging for the first time!
