What type of transmission fluid for 2003 passat 1.8 auto and how to fill?

We bought a car and swapped out the engine and transmission . Trying to figure out what type of fluid the transmission uses. We called the dealer all they told us was 23$ per litter and its special VW fluid. I want to know if anyone has used anything else from an auto parts store. Ive searched here and could not get an answer. Thanks for the help.

Also how do you fill the transmission fluid?

Pentosin. Not something to cheap out on, imo.

Regarding your search, look in the Info Base.

I use Valvoline MaxLife Dex/Merc, other people like to use their own favorites, including OEM fluid. And don't forget the filter/pan gasket kit. You need to look up how to fill, as it is done from below with the engine running. You'll need 14mm and 17mm hex drivers, some Torx drivers, jack stands, plus an arrangement to get the fluid up into the fill hole. I use a 1/2" I.D. hose from a funnel on a ladder, other people use hand pumps, etc. Search and you'll find some complete descriptions.

Thanks for the responses. I looked in the data base for fluid, transmission fluid, how to fill. Saw one for the manual transmission and saw one for the v6 model. Not sure if it was the same or not.

V6 auto and 1.8T auto are serviced exactly the same.

Due to the way the transmission is constructed, you can only drain about two-thirds of the fluid at any one time. Therefore, you're always mixing old and new fluid. For that reason, I feel it's safest to use only only OEM VW fluid, or the Pentosin equivalent.

BTW, the classic tutorial on how to do this is HERE.
