Chip for the ecu. Some to choose from are Unitronic, Giac, APR, Revo etc.

#1 Motor mounts. Something firmer than stock. I put in RS4 mounts and they transformed the car.

#2 17 wheels with lower profile tires. 65 series tires are not your friend if you want a sports sedan feel.

pick if you want to mod for looks or speed.

    looks: wheels, shocks/springs, bodykit, etc..

speed: shocks/springs, brakes, tires (you need to be able to stop before you GO), chip, DV upgrade, bigger turbos, etc...

Again, you want looks mod or speed mod. Also is it your daily driver?

Lastly, what is your mind's eye for this car. the end results.

oh... It's a v6 you say. If you want to go fast, you're only option is to supercharge it. Or swap in / buy a passat that has a 1.8t in it then chip and go from there. W8's have no go fast upgrades other than putting a nice custom exhaust or intake on it.

For an egregious amount of money you can turbo it, but you'd be better off attempting a 2.7t swap from an Audi (its been done) because you're literally looking at EVERY part of the turbo build being custom. If you chip it, you'll probably go right over the 200hp mark and add a little bit of torque.

Let's be honest here, I own a 1.8T (mom owned a V6 at one point) but there's a considerable amount of evidence on threads around here suggesting that the V6 (like the MKIV platforms VR6) does not have many tuning options. You're better off working on the stance and handling of the car, making the car watertight (search water ingress...), maintaining various oil leak problem areas, in addition to PCV hassles, and making the car awesome in the interior. Expect money to be aside to fix occasional problems with the central convenience module going haywire, and replacing control arms when the ball joints fail or the bushings begin to tear.

PS: I'd keep it to one thread, this looks like the third... one about getting a W8, a "new" v6 tuning thread, and this one.
PS#2: Don't go searching eBay for V6 turbo kits, you'll be fairly disappointed with the quality of what you might end up with. Take the time to research everything, you're not going to find everything you want to do the first night you post a thread, woops threads , on Passatworld forums.

    lets see, 500 to spend.

full tank of gas, oil change, fix the PCV system, tune up (plugs, wires, filters both air and fuel, clean the throttle body, and valve cover gaskets. that should about cover the 500 lol.

vwb5t nailed it. $500 bucks is better spent on preventative maintenance than mods.

    Ya, the V6...

The supercharger is the only 'real' upgrade for speed and power.

You can do a cold air intake, tune and or exhaust, but it isn't a large gain. Example, a 1.8t can get chipped and get a 30% or more increase. If a V6 get chipped, your looking at a 5% increase (the same as a CIA or exhaust).

For $500.00, if you want to do something fun; install two flowmasters or magnaflow mufflers on it. you will like the sound and your butt dyno will be happy.

PS: search youtube for sounds of a V6 passat and the exhausts.

for v6, here's what i find to be the most common mods you can do without supercharging:

    Engine/Brake/Suspension Performance:

    -ECU chip
-TCU chip (if you have tiptronic)
-keep oem air intake but use k&n filter
-exhaust mods (delete resonator and/or add highflow muffler system)
    -big brake kit
-lower suspension (sport spring, coilover, or bagged setup)
-upgraded motor mounts (may get more idle vibrations due to added rigidity)
-upgraded control arms & tie rods

    Cosmetic Mods:

    -new wheels/tires
    -body kits, grilles, etc.
    -new headlights/HIDs
    -paint (color-match lowers, etc.)

if you do any/all of these, you'll most likely have a v6 passat that you love to look at, and probably has about +15-20hp and torque over stock. it might not look like much, but with the added look, feel and sounds that come with the mods, you'll feel a difference. if you have an automatic, then the TCU chip might help things feel even better, since it seems to really improve the shift times while using the tiptronic.

oh, and if you know someone with a VAG, then maybe you can get a quick little free mod done... there's a way to change the coding within the ECU into what is referred to as "Sport" mode. there's an old thread around here somewhere that gives you all the info you need. it doesn't make any huge changes, but you'll probably feel a little better throttle response and when giving her the full beans, you'll notice that it will hold gears to a higher rpm before shifting. i've been in full auto mode and had my v6 screaming up to about the 5.5-6k rpm mark before it shifted. definitely makes things a little more fun.

HIDs is one of the best/most practical mods, imo.
