Should you buy that used VW Passat? This flowchart will help you decide

Seems like every day we get another person asking this question on the forum. Here is a flowchart to help you decide (click twice on the picture to view full size)

Thank god. I'm so sick of opening up these "Should I buy a Passat? Do you, members of a Passat enthusiast forum, like Passats?" threads every single day.

    Great job!

i belong to a blazer forum and when people ask us what we think, we will be honest with them, a lot of people do recommend them and then some dont. just because i belong to a blazer forum does not mean that i think they are the best car ever and that i think everyone should drive them. im sorry for wasting your precious time, if you dont like reading the threads why do you open them? and thank you to the guys that actually gave me advice and didnt complain, i do appreciate it.

    It's funny because it's true

Nemo my fishy friend do not take it personally, in fact yours wasn't even the only thread today with the same topic. There does seem to be a handful of them on a daily basis, so laugh along now that you realize its not personal and the picture, at each step, is hilariously yet frighteningly accurate.

I sold my passat and bought a Pajero. The pajero is great and I needed it as I moved to a farm where my driveway is 4km of bad dirt.

but......... when I travel long distances I miss my passat dearly!

so much so that I still browse here every now and again.

    Awesome.

But it's only a subset of buying criteria; you need to add a section for checking under carpets for electronic 'paddling pools', and another for having the mental dexterity to find a vacuum leak in a jungle of rubber tubing and plastic valves. And then there could be a question about whether you can dislocate your shoulders, elbows and wrists to reach certain parts without disassembling half the engine. Not to mention, do you mind driving without heat in winter.

Oh boy, I should stop....too many possibilities.

Very well done, if a bit negative! my 2004.5 GLS 1.8T TIP, has been far less expensive to maintain ~ not in the same boring league as Toy/Hon/Nis but overall not bad at all.

For VW, we attract the passionate, not the sheep driving boring cars.

And with just a few alterations, it could been used when purchasing a new Passat (or at least during the B5/5.5 years!)

Excellent flowchart - perfectly executed. And I draw those @&$*^% things regularly.

That about sums it up. Just missing the 'The local VW dealer. They say they won't charge much to work on it.' going to the 'Buy a Toyota instead' end-point.

Yeah, I love my Passat like I loved my old Talon. Too bad in both cases the same car 10 years later isn't the same formula, and another model that's closer is either not made as well, or costs way more...
