I reset my p0171 code and drove around for awhile, hopefully it doesn't come back.
Found out today that the timing belt has never been changed on mine. 110k on the original.
Many people change it a good bit before 100k because some have had it break around there.
Me, I'm planning to pull my driver door apart and check solder connections on the lock mechanism.
I found out where the previous owner did all of his maintenance. Turns out, he was given a list of things to replace at 95k miles.
Here is the list he was given:
Water pump
Timing Belt
tensioners
pullys
front and rear brakes and rotors
both cv boots
valve cover gaskets
tires
air filter
He declined the maintenance and i bought this car used from a dealer with 96k miles
Ive already done this stuff without knowing that list:
Tires
air filter
both cv boots and axel
all brakes and rotors
I was given this timing belt information yesterday![]()
Well at least now you know. I'd get on it asap that's for sure! If you can do it your self it's not too expensive.
Painted lower spioler, side skirts, and rear valance. Much cleaner look....
uh.. I mean spoiler.![]()
Any pictures? Did you just spray it down and leave it textured or did you sand the plastic smooth? I've always wondered how it would look with the texture, but worried about the paint not quite matching.
Just set surveillance on it. I don't trust my roommate today for some reason.
Found code 0513 in my climatronic today. the information i have only labels it as Gateway... Not sure what that means or how to fix it
Actually I was able to have the body shop that did the work from the accident paint it all for me for the discountd labor rate they give Mercury. All was painted for $500. Turned out really nice. It totally tranformes the front end. It is amazing how much character is lost with the black bottom.
Today I overwrote my stock ECU copy's EEPROM with a virgin bin file and that FINALLY let me fire her up for the first time since Tuesday of last week. She sounded great except there was a consistent misfire on cylinder one. Normally I would pull plug and look for spark or perhaps oil in plug recess, but cylinder 1 is of course under the SC.
Turns out the misfire issue was sorted by reseating the injector electrical connector on #1. Job done.
I then took a turn around the SW Capital beltway tonight on my stock ECU copy. The tuned ECU did not arrive today in the post and since I sorted the misfire, I had to do some distance at speed and recharge the batteries, hers and mine.
More about my first impressions of SuperCooled30V.

ah ha. I see. For some reason, i was thinking that you'd re-done it in the black, and I was hoping for a way to do it myslef wiht spray bombsBody shop work is a ways away for me. I'm doing a good stock mechanical restoration on a budget, but little things to make the old girl look good aren't out of the question. I was thinking about rock-guard or some such crap.
half of a timing belt job. took my time... wont be able to finish it until Sunday.
I am as well, but I do not think it will be that bad on the front and rear, no more than the flak you get on the painted portions. The sides are what I am curious to see. I will be getting oem mud flaps to mitigate as much of it as I can. I will post pics once it is buttoned up.
Almost 50 degrees here today. Gave her a wash and fresh oil + filter today, good for another 4-5k. Replaced tranny mounts as well while I was under there.
Maintenance list before she gets chipped this spring is now down to just lower front control arms, front pads + rotors, and a few PCV bits.
0513 in hexadecimal is 1299 in decimal.

Please tell me you had to use a lookup calculator for that. If not, your positronic neural network has me in deep nerd envy.

QUESTION: How do you clean the black plastic trim on the bottom of the B5.5 passat? Mine is grey now and it's irritating me!
I used some McGuire's stuff this past fall, "back to black" or something..... with mixed results. It made things look nice for about 3 days.... By then, it had attracted so much dust that I figured I should'a saved my time and money. I've been giving some thought to using a spray-on rock guard or something for a more permanent result. On my car, half way through another crappy Alberta winter, my skirting trim has a greyish-brownish greasy film that is really difficult to remove from the plastic. I'd love to hear of a solution.
"Back to Black" is made by Mother's not Meguiars, and I've found that it works quite well. You have to apply it correctly though. Massage it on liberally, let it dry to a haze, then buff it off. If you try and do it in one step like its Armor All it just runs off. The drying and buffing is key. May take a couple applications if it's faded really badly. After that it should last a decent length of time.
Not sure about removing any kind of greasy film. My plastic skirts just get faded to grey from sun exposure.
took this out. plugged in resistors. kept suction jet pump in place. dv straight to intake manifold. oh how i love VW vacuum lines, check valves, and one time use clamps.
